Shakur Stevenson vs. Franklin Manzanilla
In this situation the younger and former Olympian Stevenson will have the advantage of the home fans. Manzanilla will likely need to knockout the undefeated Stevenson in his own back yard. Despite not being the higher rated boxer, at least technically, the Olympic experience and undefeated record of Stevenson sets himself apart as far as being a quality choice with upside.
Featherweight Boxing
Originally Newark, New Jersey native Shakur Stevenson was supposed to take on Hairon Socarras for a homecoming featherweight matchup in his own back yard at the Prudential Center. However, Socarras dropped out of the scheduled 10 round bout and instead it will be world championship contender Franklin Manzanilla that will step into the ring against Stevenson. This will be Stevenson’s first ever home fight as a professional. For Stevenson it is both an opportunity and a potential danger as Manzanilla is a prestigious and dangerous opponent that will serve as a viable threat to spoil Stevenson’s homecoming. In fact, Manzanilla could well get a lot of betting action as the surprise fill-in that is ranked higher than the home town hero Stevenson.
Franklin Manzanilla is 30 years old and a native of Venezuela that now resides in Colombia. Manzanilla stands at five feet, seven inches tall and fights from an orthodox stance. He is ranked 11th in the world.
Shakur Stevenson is 22 years old and a native of Newark, New Jersey that now resides in Alexandria, Virginia. Stevenson is ranked 14th in the world and a former United States Olympian that won a silver medal as a Bantamweight in the 2016 games at Rio de Janeiro.
Stevenson made quite the name for himself as an amateur when he won the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championships as well as the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.
In his last bout on April 20, 2019 Stevenson faced Christopher Diaz for the International Boxing Federation Inter-Continental Featherweight championship at Madison Square Garden, New York. Stevenson scored a 10-round unanimous decision win in what was his first title defense of that belt. Stevenson won the championship on January 18, 2019 when he scored a fourth-round technical knockout win over Jessie Cris Rosales.
Manzanilla last fought on February 9, 2019 against Ray Vargas at the Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio where he lost a 12 round unanimous decision. At stake was the World Boxing Council world super bantamweight title.
