NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest Betting

Unfortunately, the NBA Slam Dunk Contest has lost a lot of its luster. The Slam Dunk Contest was the pinnacle of All-Star Game Weekend in the 1980s when we saw Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan rock the rim. Kobe Bryant won this event the last time the All-Star Game was in Cleveland, but we haven’t seen a truly memorable Slam Dunk Contest since Zach LaVine won this event in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016.

2022 AT&T Slam Dunk Contest Participants

Jalen Green: Houston Rockets

Obi Toppin: New York Knicks

Cole Anthony: Orlando Magic

Juan Toscano-Anderson: Golden State Warriors

Three of the participants in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest are in their first or second years in the NBA. Jalen Green was the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft, and he is seen as a slight favorite to win this event. Green is cutting his teeth with the lowly Houston Rockets, and he is averaging 14.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 2.4 APG. He is making just 38.2% of his field goals and 30% of his three-pointers, but the rookie has shown some impressive agility on his dunks as a rookie. Green is only 6’4, yet he can throw down like a player with a few extra inches.

Obi Toppin was a lottery pick for the New York Knicks two years ago, but he hasn’t been too impressive in the NBA. Toppin is averaging just 7.3 PPG and 3.6 RPG, yet he was invited back to this event after finishing runner-up to winner Anfernee Simons last March. The 6’9 forward from Dayton showed he has the potential to post some big scores, so he might be the best bet on the board in this contest.

The other young gun taking part in the Slam Dunk Contest this year is Orlando’s Cole Anthony. The guard out of North Carolina is the son of Greg Anthony, and his dad will certainly be in attendance watching the action if not announcing it for TNT. Cole Anthony isn’t a very effective shooter, but he is averaging 17.6 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 5.9 APG. He might be a little limited with what he can do though as he is 6’3.

Lightly used Juan Toscano-Anderson is considered the longshot to win the Slam Dunk Contest. He is averaging 4.5 PPG and 2.6 RPG in his third season with Golden State, and he will turn 29 in two months. Toscano-Anderson showed off a ridiculous dunk in December, leading to him being invited to this competition. He might be worth a bet given his odds since he theoretically has had more time to practice given his limited playing time.

Slam Dunk Contest Format

According to the NBA’s website, all four competitors will have two dunk attempts in the first round. The players will have three attempts to make each dunk, and the judges will score their efforts on a scale of 6-10 since we never used to see 1-5 scores in this competition anyways. The two players with the highest scores in the first round will face off head-to-head in the final round. They will have two dunks in the final round to determine a winner.
