Bobby Knuckles is back in the hunt. After surrendering the undisputed title to Israel Adesanya in October 2019, Robert Whittaker will fight for the first time this year in a main event against Darren Till in Abu Dhabi. The loss snapped an extraordinary nine-fight winning streak that included high profile victories over Derek Brunson, Ronaldo Souza and Yoel Romero (twice).

There are some legitimate concerns about Bobby Knuckles. For starters, the 29-year old has had a history of serious injuries. He’s still young, but the body becomes less resilient the more you go through - and the Aussie has been sidelined with knee injuries, staph infections, hernias and even a life-threatening collapsed bowel. There’s also the fact that he went through two all-out wars with Yoel Romero, nearly being finished on both occasions. Those are the types of scraps that take years off your life.

After a history of weight-cutting issues, Darren Till finally moved up to middleweight - back-to-back knockout losses to Tyron Woodley (in a title shot) and Jorge Masvidal probably sped up that decision making. In his 185-pound debut, Till scored a minor upset over Kelvin Gastelum, walking away with a split decision. Though it wasn’t a dominant win by any means, beating Kelvin in any way, shape or form means a lot at this weight class. Beating Whittaker would vault him into the title picture.

In the co-main event, we get a legends fight between Shogun Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. This will be the third fight between the Brazilians - Rua beat lil ‘Nog at Pride in 2005 and UFC 190. Neither man has said they’d retire after this bout, but one can’t picture either going for much longer. There’s an excellent chance that this might be the last time you see one of these two dudes compete.

Ever wondered how Alexander Gustafsson would fare as a heavyweight? Us neither. But the question will be answered, as the Swede is moving up in weight after losses to Jon Jones (again) and Anthony Smith. His first test is a big one: former champion Fabricio Werdum. Admittedly, a win over a 42-year old Vai Cavalo doesn’t mean as much as it used to, but it would be a killer way to start off in a new division. Gustafsson never seemed particularly big for 205, but at 6’4” he probably walks around at close to 230 anyway. Perhaps he’ll be a speed demon in the division - or maybe he gets trucked over by legitimate big guys. Werdum has lost two straight, getting knocked out by Alexander Volkov in 2018, then coming back from a PEDs suspension to drop a split decision Alexey Oleynik this past May.

We’ve also got to mention that Umar Nurmagomedov, the younger cousin of Khabib, will make his UFC debut on the prelim card. The younger Nurmagomedov is 12-0 in MMA, and anybody with that last name is going to be of interest.
