Venue: UFC Fight Island

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

The UFC flyweight title is up for grabs, courtesy of Henry Cejudo. Although it’s fair to speculate whether this division will still be around in the near future, the fact that the organization still wants a champ is a good sign for the 125-pounders.

With Demetrious Johnson overseas and Henry Cejudo hanging up the gloves, the next flyweight champion will be crowned on July 18, when No. 1 contender Deiveson Figueiredo meets No. 2 Joe Benavidez. The matchup headlines an excellent fight card in Abu Dhabi - it’s also an immediate rematch.

The two first met this past February, where Figueiredo walked away the winner with a second round TKO. However, since the Brazilian missed weight by 2.5 pounds, he was ineligible to fight for the title. An incidental clash of heads also opened up a nasty cut on Benavidez’s head - something that could have contributed to the loss. That was enough for Dana White to grant a second go-round, with the title again on the line.

Figueiredo has won seven of eight UFC fights, with his only loss coming to Jussier Formiga. Just as impressively, he’s finished five of those opponents. Unsurprisingly, he’s been calling himself the real champion after his win over Benavidez.

A longtime vet, Benavidez has been a contender for what seems like forever. This will be his fourth attempt at winning the title, with two previous losses coming against Demetrious Johnson. To be honest, it’d be pretty awesome to see him reach the ultimate goal after coming so close for so long. For what it’s worth, Benavidez also owns a win over Cejudo.

The co-main event is probably drawing more excitement than the headliner. Middleweight contender Kelvin Gasetlum looks to bounce back from a two-fight slide in a scrap against Jack Hermansson. Gastelum gave middleweight champ Israel Adesanya his toughest fight, but dropped a split decision against Darren Till in the followup. The 28-year old is in danger of dropping out of the elite contender ranks here, as three straight losses takes a while to dig out of.

Hermansson was knocking on the door to a title shot, peaking with a recent four-fight winning streak that included a win over Jacare Souza. However, a September 2019 matchup against Jared Cannonier resulted in a tough TKO loss. A win here would pretty much erase the defeat to Cannonier, as Gastelum is much more high profile opponent.

A Lightweight bout between Marc Diakiese and Rafael Fiziev should be a lot of fun. Both guys are excellent strikers, and Diakiese shook off a three-fight losing streak with back-to-back decisions against Joe Duffy and Lando Vannata. Fiziev was knocked out in his UFC debut, but got back on track with a decision win over Alex White in October 2019.
