It’s time to find out whether Tai Tuivasa is a legitimate contender. After beating Andrei Arlovski this past June, the 25-year old will meet former champion Junior Dos Santos in his native Australia. It’s a huge step up for “Bam Bam”, whose crazy knockout power is making waves across a heavyweight division filling up with new contenders.

The 34-year old Dos Santos has alternated wins and losses in his past eight fights, and most recently cruised to a decision win over Blagoy Ivanov at UFC Fight Night 133 in July. It should be noted that JDS’ only losses came against Cain Velasquez (twice), Alistair Overeem and Stipe Miocic. Since making his debut, the Brazilian has only lost to elite fighters.

Dana White must love Australia, because the rest of the card is loaded for a Fight Night offering. Once again, New Zealander Mark Hunt is being tabbed to fire up the local crowd, and the former K-1 champion meets Justin Willis in a battle of big bellies. Hunt has had a rough go of it lately, going 1-3 in his past four - but like Dos Santos, all of those losses came against top-ranked big men.

The legendary Shogun Rua is back in a contest against Aussie prospect Tyson Pedro. Both men are looking to rebound off quick first-round losses - Rua was knocked out by Anthony Smith and Pedro was submitted by Ovince St. Preux. There’s not many fights left in Shogun, so make sure to catch a glimpse of the living legend while you still can. It’d be huge for Pedro to possess the scalp of such a respected figure.

UFC Fight Night 142 Betting Lines, Predictions and Picks

Tai Tuivasa struggled a bit more against a fading Arlovski than many expected, but chalk that up to growing pains for the young bruiser. He’ll have no room for error against Dos Santos though, as the Brazilian has long been one of the best boxers in the division for years. Tuivasa will have to navigate a dangerous game against a taller, longer striker. JDS is probably slightly past his prime, and has never quite been the same after Cain battered him senseless twice, but he has yet to lose to a fighter outside the top 5.

Willis-Hunt should be a crowd-pleaser, as both men are rotund punishers with one-punch knockout power. Hunt’s probably extremely happy to not have to face an awesome wrestler for a change, but his chin will be put to the test by Willis. From what we’ve seen, Willis seems a decent wrestler, and if he can take Hunt down the complexion of this fight changes greatly.

Tyson Pedro looked well on his way to becoming a top-10 fighter, but two losses in his past three have set the Australian back. Shogun would be the biggest win of his career, but Pedro is dealing with a guy with literally four times as many fights. There’s been flashed of the old Shogun in recent tilts, but they seem to come less and less these days. This version of Shogun fights far older than his age, but the 36-year old remains dangerous with his fists.
