Where: Madison Square Garden Theatre, New York, New York

Why: WBA and WBO Super World Lightweight Title

WBA and WBO Super World Lightweight Title

Jose Pedraza is ranked fourth in the world and will be defending his World Boxing Organization World Super Lightweight title belt for the first time after winning it in his last bout on August 25, 2018 against Ray Beltran in a unanimous decision at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Pedraza, also known as “Sniper” is 25 years of age and a native of Puerto Rico where he still resides. Pedraza stands at five feet, eight inches tall with a reach of 71 inches and fights from an orthodox stance.

Vasiliy Lomachenko is ranked first in the world and is the better known and more highly regarded boxer in this matchup with a stellar record of championships for his career. Lomachenko is 30 years old and also known as “Hi Tech.” Lomachenko fights from a southpaw stance and is five feet, seven inches tall with a reach of 65.5 inches. A native of Ukraine, Lomachenko now resides in Oxnard, California. Lomachenko holds several all-time records for earning world championship titles in the least amount of time. As a matter of fact, Lomachenko won a title belt in his very first professional bout.

In his last bout on May 12, 2018 Lomachenko defeated Jorge Linares in a 10th round technical knockout for the World Boxing Association Super World Lightweight championship at Madison Square Garden in New York. The bout was scheduled for 12 rounds with Lomachenko going down in round six and Linares going down in the tenth.

On December 9, 2017 Lomachenko met Guillermo Rigondeaux for the World Boxing Organization Super World Lightweight title at Madison Square Garden theater in New York and scored a retirement win in the sixth round of a scheduled 10 round bout.

Prior to his championship win over Beltran, Pedraza met Antonio Moran for the World Boxing Organization World Lightweight title on June 9, 2018 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. Pedraza scored a ten round unanimous decision win over Moran for the World Boxing Organization World Lightweight title.

Jose Pedraza vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko

Certainly, Lomachenko is the more celebrated fighter with an impeccable resume of championship success. However, the price for this fight is sky high and Pedraza has enough of a record that he could offer vastly superior value. Lomachenko undeniably deserves to be the chalk but perhaps not at this price. That being said it will still be a tall order for Pedraza to walk away with the title belts.
