Anthony Dirrell vs. David Benavidez Preview

Dirrell has one of the most encouraging stories of any active boxer. Just two years into a promising career, he was forced to step away from the ring. Dirrell had accumulated a 12-0 record, but he had to take a break from boxing after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He was away from the ring for almost two years before being cleared to return to action. Dirrell picked up right where he left off, winning his next 14 fights to run his record to 26-0 before receiving his first title fight. On December 2013, he took on Sakio Bika in New York City, and the two boxed to a draw. That led to a rematch in Los Angeles eight months later, where Dirrell won by unanimous decision to claim the super middleweight title.

Unfortunately for Dirrell, he couldn’t hold on to the title for long. He faced Badou Jack in April 2015, and he lost the title by majority decision. Dirrell has showed the heart of a champion since the defeat, winning his last six fights ahead of this fight. He claimed the WBC super middleweight title once more by beating Avni Yildrim in February, stopping Yildrim in the 10th round.

David Benavidez has been extremely impressive since turning pro at the age of 17. He won 17 of his first 18 fights by knockout, winning 12 of those fights in the first two rounds. Such an exciting start led to Benavidez receiving a title fight at the age of 20. He squared off against Ronald Gavril for the WBC super middleweight title, beating him by split decision despite being knocked down in the final round.

That led to a rematch, and a second fight between the two took place in February 2018. Benavidez showed that he learned a lot from the first tilt, and he won every round against Gavril. He was set to fight Dirrell in late 2018, but then a positive drug test led to Benavidez being forced to relinquish his title. Benavidez served a four-month suspension for having cocaine in his system before knocking out J’Leon Love by TKO in the second round in March 2019.
