Old School Meets New School
16 years is a long time to go without playing your biggest in-state rival, but it’s been that long since the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Pittsburgh Panthers have squared off. These programs seem to be in about the same place at this point, but while Pitt is happy to be an 8-win team every season, Penn State is anxious to be in this spot and James Franklin is on the hot seat. College Football Week 2 doesn’t have many exciting storylines, but this is certainly one of them.Kickoff for this regular season Week 2 game is set for Saturday, September 10, 2016, at 12 p.m.ET at Heinz Field on ESPN....
The East Carolina Pirates have had a reputation for being giant killers over the last few seasons. East Carolina has knocked off Virginia Tech in each of the last two seasons and before that, knocked off North Carolina as part of a home and home in 2013 and 2014. That kind of record against ACC foes would scare most teams away from scheduling them, but not the North Carolina State Wolfpack who travel to Greenville in College Football Week 2.This matchup in Week 2 of the regular season will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2016,at 12 p.m. ET at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on ESPNU....
The buzz surrounding the No. 19 Louisville Cardinals has only intensified after their performance in the season opener. Lamar Jackson was one of the stars of the week thanks to eight first-half touchdowns against FBS newcomer Charlotte in a 56-point rout. Now, the Cardinals will look to build on that momentum with a win in its first conference game of the season. Louisville will take on the Syracuse Orange in College Football Week 2 on Friday. This matchup in Week 2 of the regular season will take place on Friday, September 9, 2016,at 8 p.m. ET at the Carrier Dome on ESPN2....
T. Boone Pickens almost saw his alma mater get to the College Football Playoff last season after a 10-0 start. The No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys rose to No. 4 in the polls, but then lost their last two regular season games to Baylor and Oklahoma and instead had to settle for a New Year’s Six Bowl. Hopes are high in Stillwater again this season despite a brutal road schedule, but before conference play starts, the Cowboys have to get through non-conference play unscathed. In Week 2 college football, they will host the team they opened the season with last year, the Central Michigan Chippewas. This matchup in Week 2 of the regular season will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2016,at 12 p.m. ET at Boone Pickens Stadium on FS1....
Football at a NASCAR track? For the first time ever this week, College GameDay will be live at a NASCAR track as Tennessee and Virginia Tech square off at Bristol Motor Speedway. Aside from that, College Football Week 2 looks remarkably barren but these are usually the weeks where crazy stuff happens. After an action filled Week 1, what does Week 2 have in store for us?...
Though both the Cincinnati Bearcats and Purdue Boilermakers secured victories in their season debuts, neither was one each would confidently thump their chests about. Both offenses scuffled when you really dig into the numbers, and while a win is still a win, there’s still much work to be done for both clubs if in fact each is to record their second win of the season and take a step closer towards becoming bowl eligible....
After a disastrous 2015 season, the Maryland Terrapins started their season right with a win in their opener. The Terps cruised to a 52-13 win over FCS Howard in new coach DJ Durkin’s debut and held the Bison scoreless through the first three quarters of the game. Maryland has a more difficult opponent in College Football Week 2 against the Florida International Golden Panthers. If Maryland gets a win this week, it will need just one more to match its win total from last year....
After going winless a year ago, the Central Florida Golden Knights were able to crank out a win against South Carolina State in Scott Frost’s head coaching debut. That’s all good and dandy, but the overall effort was far from pristine and now they have to travel to the Big House in Week 2 where the Michigan Wolverines just dominated and nearly shutout Hawaii in their home debut. Jim Harbaugh looks to be out for style points before the schedule gets tougher, and that can only mean bad news for th...
The Northern Illinois Huskies dipped under the double-digit win plateau in 2015, but with a returning quarterback, hopes to push back up again this season. The start shouldn’t be too tough as they take on the Wyoming Cowboys, who are coming off a poor season and are breaking in a new signal-caller. Northern Illinois may be on the road but it still enters this Week 1 regular season matchup as a comfortable favorite. This contest in Week 1 of the regular season will go down Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 10:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming....
The Week 1 non-conference clash between the Ole Miss Rebels and the Florida State Seminoles is technically taking place at a neutral site this year, but the stadium in Orlando is more than 500 miles closer to Florida State so the Seminoles could definitely have the advantage....
Both USC and Alabama will be looking to build upon impressive winning streaks in season openers with the Trojans looking to rattle off their 19th straight and the Crimson Tide their 15th. Each of these teams has glaring question marks entering Week 1. The defending champs lost a number of players from last year’s championship team to graduation and the NFL, while the Pac-12 reps have a fresh new coaching staff in place. Regardless, this is a matchup of two of the most athletically gifted teams in the country, and it’s one you’ll certainly want to tune into Saturday night.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium....
Jim McElwain laid the ground work for getting the Gators program back into the upper echelon of the SEC last season by leading Florida to its first outright division title since 2009. Still, the memory of a three-game skid that concluded with a 41-7 trouncing at the hands of Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl put a damper on the overall effort. With 11 starters and depth returning from that team, the Gators will be out to turn the page quickly and the sacrificial lamb first up on the Week 1 menu is a Massachusetts team that no longer has Tajae Sharpe to reel in backdoor covering touchdown passes. This contest in Week 1 of the regular season will go down Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium....
Surprisingly, there’s not a lot of buzz surrounding the No. 16 UCLA Bruins this season. UCLA has the best sophomore quarterback in the country in Josh Rosen and he shined for most of the season. He and the Bruins are field-goal underdogs in Week 1 College Football action against the Texas AM Aggies and will be looking to prove the oddsmakers wrong. Whether or not they do that or not, depends in large part on just how good Rosen plays.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. ET at Kyle Field. This game will be broadcast on CBS....
It’s make or break time for Mark Stoops and the Kentucky Wildcats. For the last two seasons, Kentucky has had a hot start and two wins against conference opponents before the wheels fell off in mid-October. Kentucky will be hard-pressed to match that hot start against its College Football Week 1 opponent, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Southern Miss had one of the best offenses in the country last season and almost toppled Nebraska. Kentucky will have to be careful in this one.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Commonwealth Stadium. This game will be broadcast on ESPNU....
Life without Dak Prescott begins now for Mississippi State. The most lauded player in program history is now making heads turn during the NFL preseason and Bulldogs fans have to be missing him already. Prescott brought the Bulldogs to their first ever No. 1 ranking in the AP poll and leaves as the school’s leader in every major passing category. Mississippi State will take on the South Alabama Jaguars in College Football Week 1 with no clear answer regarding who will replace Prescott.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 12 p.m. ETat Davis Wade Stadium. This game will be broadcast on the SEC Network....
People in Dallas and Houston were excited by last season’s head coaching hires. However, while Tom Herman thrived with the Cougars in his first season, Chad Morris and the SMU Mustangs sputtered to a 2-10 record. SMU showed signs of life after a winless campaign though and that’s cause for optimism. This season the Mustangs will open College Football Week 1 against one of the two teams they defeated last year, the North Texas Mean Green.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 7 p.m. ET at Apogee Stadium. This game will be broadcast on American Sports Network....
The first year of the Mike Riley regime didn’t necessarily go as planned. The seven losses accrued marked the first time a Nebraska Cornhuskers team lost that many games since 2007. Still, four of the defeats came by way of three or less points so there is some optimism in Lincoln heading into Week 1 of 2016. The same can’t really be said for Fresno State who made mass changes amongst the coaching staff in hopes of rediscovering the success the program had the first two years of Tim DeRuyter’s regime....
The hype surrounding the No. 14 Washington Huskies is insane at this point. Despite going 6-6 in the regular season, many pundits are calling for the Huskies to win the PAC-12 North and some even believe this team is destined for the College Football Playoff. Expectations like that are tough for any team to fulfill, but impossible for a team that hasn’t won double-digit games in a season since 2000. The Huskies opponent in College Football Week 1 will be the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 2 p.m. ETat Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium. This game will be broadcast on the PAC-12 Network....
Two teams that are pretty much polar opposites in every way will square off in Week 1 College Football action when the Missouri Tigers travel east to face the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Tigers pride themselves on their defense and after longtime coach Gary Pinkel retired in the offseason, it was only fitting that they promoted defensive coordinator Barry Odom to the top job. Meanwhile, West Virginia is firmly in the Big 12 mindset of always wanting to outscore its opponent and Dana Holgorsen’s mission is to put 40 points on as many teams as possible.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 12 p.m. ET at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Battle of I-10 between the New Mexico State Aggies and UTEP Miners takes place on Saturday in El Paso. This Week 1 college football matchup is a big rivalry between two schools located on Interstate 10 that connects El Paso and Las Cruces. UTEP has dominated this 101-year old series in recent seasons, winning the last seven meetings. The Aggies will be looking for revenge after blowing a 14-point lead and losing 50-47 in overtime last year.Kickoff for this Week 1 college football game is set for Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas....
The Clemson Tigers’ football team had one of the most memorable seasons in program history in 2016, dominating in the regular season and advancing to the national championship game before losing a nail-biter to Alabama. With star quarterback Deshaun Watson back in the fold, the team is ranked No. 2 nationally and has designs of making another title push....
The Brigham Young Cougars have advanced to 10 consecutive bowl games and will aim to keep that streak intact in 2016. The first step would be a win in a solid early-season matchup against the Arizona Wildcats. The teams will face off in Week 1 of the regular season and the oddsmakers expect a very competitive affair. BYU will be without coach Bronco Mendenhall, who is now the coach at Virginia....
James Franklin took over the reins in Happy Valley with the odds stacked against him. Though forced to deal with scholarship restrictions levied upon the program, the Nittany Lions have gone bowling each of the first two years he overlooked the program. Penn State will look to take a step closer toward making it three straight campaigns with a bowl invite in Week 1, but standing in their way of logging win No. 1 will be an experienced Kent State squad with a defense that could give the offense fits.Watch this regular season Week 1 matchup live on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. ET at Beaver Stadium....
It’s a new chapter at Ohio State. Gone are almost all the starters from the national title winning side of two seasons ago and in their place are a bunch of very young, but talented, players. Urban Meyer has garnered enough faith at this point that his Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked No. 6 to start the season. With such a young line-up though there may be some growing pains in their Week 1 College football season opener against the Bowling Green Falcons.Kickoff for this regular season Week 1 game is set for Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 12 p.m. ET at Ohio Stadium. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network....
The Arkansas Razorbacks don’t enter 2016 with the same expectations that they had coming into 2015 and that may be a good thing. Arkansas was seen as a dark horse to win the SEC West, but after three straight losses after a season opening win, those thoughts completely disappeared. This season Arkansas will start off with a tough out-of-conference opponent in the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in College Football Week 1 action. The contest in Week 1 of the regular season will go down Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 4 p.m. ET at Razorback Stadium. This game will be broadcast on the SEC Network....
