UFC on ESPN 2: Barboza vs. Gaethje Betting

MMA Betting

UFC on ESPN 2 takes place on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The card airs live on ESPN starting 7pm ET.

In four UFC fights, Justin Gaethje has produced three Fight of the Year contenders. In 20 fights inside the octagon, Edson Barboza has put forth a few of his own, along with numerous entries into the Knockout of the Year category.

What do you think will happen when you throw them in a cage? Much to the delight of the MMA community, we’ll find out when they headline the UFC’s second event on the ESPN network. Fight of the Year is the bar - an all-time classic scrap is the ceiling here. It’s a headliner that could easily be the co-main on a pay-per-view card, and we’re getting it for free here.

Also on the card are two popular strawweights, Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Michelle Waterson. Both are skilled strikers known for their grit, which sets up a fitting appetizer course for the main event. The rest of the night is solid: middleweight contender David Branch, strawweight prospects Alexa Grasso and Marina Rodriguez and undefeated Sabina Mazo are all scheduled to make appearances.

For years, Edson Barboza has been shredding legs with the most brutal leg kicks in the business. Now he might get a taste of his own medicine - Justin Gaethje’s own leg kicks are basically a sledgehammer to the thigh. If that doesn’t work for either fighter, than might as well crawl into a nuclear shelter as these two go to war. Both Barboza and Gaethje are as tough as they come, yet fully capable of laying mushroom clouds on guys.

Ironically, Gaethje is clearly positioned to win and lose. Barboza wilts under the type of relentless pressure that the American applies, but he also specializes in the type of explosive knockout blows that can stop Gaethje’s zombie charge in its tracks. Either way, there’s just no way this is anything less than a crackerjack banger.

Here’s the list of opponents that Karolina Kowalkiewicz has lost to: Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Claudia Gadelha and Jessica Andrade. Michelle Waterson’s list of UFC opponents that beat her: Rose Namajunas, Tecia Torres. There’s a lot to like here, starting with the fact that both are known for their toughness and willingness to scrap. With Namajunas still holding the strawweight belt, the title path is wide open, giving this matchup added significance.

David Branch is still trying to figure out his place in the UFC. His UFC debut was a disappointing split-decision win over Krzysztof Jotko, the followup was a submission loss to Luke Rockhold, a win over Thiago Santos was a huge bounceback, but he was knocked out by Jared Cannonier in his last outing. A loss to Jack Hermansson would pretty much end any hope the former WSOF double champ would have at competing at the top levels of the UFC.

It wasn’t long ago that Alexa Grasso was an undefeated 10-0 prospect tabbed for future stardom. Two losses later, she’s fighting just to stay relevant. She should also be very familiar with the position her opponent is in: Marina Rodriguez is a 10-0 prospect with some big hopes at 115 pounds.
