UFC Fight Night: Thompson vs. Neal Odds
Date: Saturday, December 19, 2020
Venue: UFC Apex
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Thanks to Covid, we lost yet another sick main event between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev - both guys coincidentally came down with the virus. Luckily, there was a pretty solid co-main event: a welterweight scrap between contender Stephen Thompson and Geoff Neal.
Thompson recently bounced back from a two-fight skid - a decision loss to Darren Till and shattering KO courtesy of Anthony Pettis - with a solid decision over Vicente Luque. The 37-year old still maintains a solid ranking in a very good weight class, but he’s in real danger here. Neal is not exactly a known commodity, and ranked outside of the top 10. This fight should say a lot about whether Wonderboy still belongs in the top tier of 170.
Neal’s got a massive opportunity to score what would easily be the biggest win of his career. After earning his UFC ticket with a 2017 win in DWCS, the 30-year old has roared out to a 5-0 start inside the octagon. More impressively, he’s finished four of his opponents in that span - including TKOs over Niko Price and Mike Perry in his last two. Beating Thompson would lead to some major fights.
In the co-main event, Greg Hardy continues his undeniably compelling MMA journey. The training wheels are starting to come off for the former NFL All-Pro, as he takes a two-fight winning streak into a matchup with Marcin Tybura. Hardy will always be a curiosity because of his background and physical ability, but there is always the chance that one day he shows up inside the octagon having “figured it out”. If that happens, Hardy is gonna drop some bodies. Marcin Tybura is a legit, mid-level heavyweight and the perfect acid test - he can do a little bit of everything and is nobody’s idea of a tin can.
We absolutely love the bantamweight cracker between Marlon Moraes and Rob Font. Moraes is coming off a failed title eliminator, but still carries the No. 3 overall ranking in loaded weight class. He also happens to be one of the most dangerous knockout artists in the division, making his fights must-see affairs. A matchup with Rob Font should bang, as Font is one of those hyperaggresive, try-anything types.
Jose Aldo needs to be mentioned. He is without a doubt the featherweight GOAT, which makes him worth watching. Unfortunately, both his bantamweight fights haven’t gone so well, so it’s fair to wonder exactly what he’s trying to accomplish here. If he can’t beat Marlon Vera, then Aldo could fall into that awkward stage where he’s used as a stepping stone or gets thrown into fun fights.
