The light heavyweight division has a champion not named Jon Jones or Daniel Cormier. No disrespect to Jan Blachowicz, but the rest of the 205-pound division is likely drooling at the chance to face him for the strap.
Take Glover Teixeira - a longtime veteran that actually fought Jones for the title back in 2014. After he was dominated for five rounds, Glover has hung around the upper echelon of the weight class, playing gatekeeper for both Jones and DC. While he’s performed admirably, nobody was too excited about throwing him in there with the two aforementioned greats. But why wouldn’t he be able to beat Blachowicz? And at 40 years old, it’d be a pretty cool story to see Teixeira lift the belt after such a long journey.
What about Thiago Santos? The last time we saw him in action, he was chasing Jon Jones around on one leg. He lost a split decision that a lot of folks thought he won, then spent more than a year rehabbing a torn ACL. Prior to meeting Jones, the Brazilian had established himself as the division’s premier knockout artist, flatlining three straight to earn the title shot. Plus, he’s got a giant sledgehammer tattooed to his chest, which is just awesome.
Also on the card is a compelling strawweight scrap between Claudia Gadelha and Xiaonan Yan. We all know how good Gadelha is - beating her signifies championship ability. Though the 31-year old has had a few high-profile losses, she remains one of the most talented 115-pounders in a stacked division. But hardcore MMA fans want to see more of Yan, who is 5-0 inside the octagon. Like current champion and countrywoman Weili Zhang, Yan is a physical monster with uncommon power for the division. It’s been a ton of fun watching her batter tough chicks like Angela Hill and Karolina Kowalkiewicz, but now it’s time for her to up her competition.
Another matchup we’re psyched about? How about the heavyweight tilt between Andrei Arlovski and Tanner Boser? Arlovski has long been a litmus test for prospects to prove themselves, and Boser has earned his opportunity to stepping stone the former champ. Canada’s Boser is here to take Roy Nelson’s place as the next great mulleted heavyweight, and we’re here for it.
