UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Hooker Betting

Dan Hooker is making big moves. On June 27, the New Zealand native headlines a Fight Night card against Dustin Poirier, the No. 3 lightweight in the world and former interim title holder. Poirier is just one fight removed from a failed title bid against Khabib Nurmagomedov (spoiler alert: it wasn’t close).

UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Hooker

Date: Saturday, June 27, 2020

Venue: UFC APEX

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

If this were a videogame, Hooker would be fighting the boss before the final boss. Poirier is extremely well-regarded at 155 pounds - prior to Khabib he beat Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Anthony Pettis. That’s a murderer’s row of championship-level guys, and there are maybe two or three guys in the world who could beat that quartet in consecutive matchups.

After getting his guts mashed to mush by Edson Barboza, Hooker has reeled off three straight fights, KO-ing James Vick and scoring decisions over Al Iaquinta and Paul Felder. The win over Felder was a close split decision, but it brought The Hangman to 7-1 in his past eight - good enough for a shot at the big boys. This is a chance for the 30-year old to cement a place among the big boys - a win would guarantee some big money, high profile fights.

This headliner is gonna get violent. Dustin Poirier has a habit of getting into tough bloody battles - he’s already won a Fight of the Year and has participated in several more contenders for the prestigious award. The man personifies the “going out on your shield” mentality, and he’s never afraid to bite down on the mouthpiece and trade shots.

Hooker is one of the most aggressive dudes in the division, with a style built on pressuring opponents until they crumble. He does not stop marching forward, weaponizing his chin and cardio until opponents break. It’s a thrilling style that guarantees must-see matchups.

There’s a solid supporting cast backing up this banger too. The most recognizable name here is Mike Perry, who has achieved cult status as a walking MMA stereotype. He’s got the tattoos, a “gangster” persona and talks some really bad trash. But credit where credit’s due: Mike Perry can crack with the best of them and lay dudes out cold. He’s been in a slide, but a matchup with Mickey Gall could be exactly what he needs to jumpstart his career. Gall came to fame with a win over CM Punk, but he’s failed to build off that momentum.

Aspen Ladd is arguably the most exciting prospect at women’s bantamweight, and the 25-year old has rebounded nicely since a loss to GDR. Coming off a win over Yana Kunitskaya, Ladd meets veteran Sara McMann - a journeywoman that fought a peak Ronda Rousey for the title. McMann is nearing the end of a respectable career and plays the gatekeeper role here. A loss for Ladd could be disastrous, but it could also be the reality check she needs to make sure she develops at a proper pace.

The UFC tried to make Alexa Grasso a thing, and it’s easy to see why. She’s attractive and a native of Mexico - a market where the UFC desperately wants to gain a foothold. But like Paige Van Zant, Grasso has failed to make a difference in the win column, where she’s alternated wins and losses for six straight fights. Now, Grasso will move up a weight class in hopes of igniting a flagging career. Her first challenge at 125 is Ji Yeon Kim, a middling flyweight. If Grasso can’t get the win it doesn’t look so good for chances at flyweight.
