UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Sakai Betting

Heavyweight legend Alistair Overeem (46-18, 24 KOs, 17 SUBs) will meet prospect Augusto Sakai (15-1, 11 KOs) at UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Sakai on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card airs live on ESPN starting 9pm ET. Also on the card is action fighter Michel Pereira, who is better known for practicing his gymnastics during fights, and former women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano, who has been unable to get her career in gear after losing the belt. The rest of the card is filled with lesser-known fighters, but there are definitely some names to watch. Let’s take a look at some of the upcoming action - check the UFC odds at BookMaker.eu for opening lines.

UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Sakai

Date: Saturday, September 5, 2020

Venue: UFC Apex

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

When it’s all said and done, Overeem will end up in the Hall of Fame - and for far more than just his UFC accomplishments. He is the only combat fighter to hold heavyweight titles in major MMA and kickboxing organizations, and we might never see another fighter match his exploits in Pride, Strikeforce, Dream, K-1 and the UFC. Somehow, at age 40 and 64 pro MMA fights, Overeem still matters. He is never far from the title conversation, though it’s fair to assume that he’ll never win a UFC title, it’s not hard to fathom that a short winning streak could put him in another title shot.

In fact, if he ever got his hands on the UFC belt, Overeem might have an argument as the heavyweight MMA GOAT. Just throwing that out there.

After back-to-back losses to Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes, The Reem has been putting in work against solid fighters. He’s put together a 3-1 run, knocking out Sergey Pavlovich, Aleksei Oleinik and Walt Harris. The lone loss came against Jairzinho Rozenstruik, and Overeem was easily winning that fight until getting caught with a hail mary punch in the last few seconds. Now, he’ll look to blow up the hype of another prospect when he meets Bellator alum Augusto Sakai.

Sakai earned his way to the UFC through Dana White’s Contender Series, and he has earned victories in all four octagon appearances. The Brazilian hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, but he is a big, big boy who throws serious leather. However, his UFC results give you a glimpse of what his fights are like - 4 wins, 2 KOs, 2 split decisions (against Arlovski and Blagoy Ivanov). He’s not the type that’ll bowl dudes over, and he’s perfectly happy dragging out wins. We’ll see what Overeem brings out of him.

Also on the card is Brazil’s Michel Pereira - who is one of the most wildly entertaining fighters in the division today. Unfortunately, he’s entertaining for mostly the wrong reasons: from his choreographed walkout routines or his cardio-draining showboating. It’d be one thing if he was winning. But fans have little patience for a fighter who acts like a star that hasn’t earned it. Despite what you think, nobody can deny he’s a flashy dude with some serious physical abilities. The UFC is giving him a bounceback fight and a good style matchup in Zelim Imadaev, who hunts for knockouts and nothing else.

We also need to mention Nico Montano, who was the inaugural women’s flyweight champion. After winning TUF 26 and earning the strap, Montano was never able to make a defense due to an inability to get to the cage healthy. Valentina Shevchenko seized the belt and has since lapped the division. Montao was finally able to return (at bantamweight) but lost to Julianna Pena a year ago. Now she’ll try to stop Julia Avila, an Invicta alum with a 2-0 UFC record.
