UFC Fight Night: Holm vs. Aldana

Date: Saturday, October 3, 2020

Venue: UFC Fight Island

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

How much longer can Holly Holm headline Fight Nights? She might be one of the biggest woman fighters in the UFC, but the former champion has failed to recapture the magic of her mythical upset of Ronda Rousey in 2015. She’s 3-3 in her last six, and has somehow rode her fame to three more title shots despite her mediocre record.

Just for the record: she fought for the inaugural featherweight title after a loss to Shevchenko (she lost to GDR), fought Cris Cyborg for the featherweight title after a single win at bantamweight over Bethe Correia, and needed just one win at featherweight to earn a bantamweight championship match against Amanda Nunes. Holm is good, but being pretty much the only bankable name in the women’s upper weight classes has gotten her fights that raised eyebrows. Now at 38 years old, who knows how much longer she can win at even a .500 clip?

Irene Aldana has an excellent opportunity to use Holm as a stepping stone. It’s no secret that the UFC is hoping to build native Mexican stars in a boxing-crazed country. She wouldn’t be hard to promote: Aldana is attractive and has a fan-friendly style. After two straight losses to kick off her UFC career, the 32-year old has reeled off a 5-1 run, most recently knocking out Ketlen Vieira at UFC 245. Holm would easily be the biggest win of her career.

Sticking with the bantamweight division, Germaine de Randamie meets Julianna Pena in a top contender fight. GDR is coming off a failed title bid against Nunes - The Iron Lady did excellent work on the feet and was dominated on the ground. Pena will try to follow the same gameplan and put de Randamie on her back. It’s clear that this is a striker vs. grappler affair - the question is who can impose where the fight goes.

When a fighter rocks a mullet, he’s got our curiosity. When a heavyweight fighter rocks a mullet and is dropping dudes, then he’s got our attention. If you’re not familiar with the wonderfully named Tanner Boser, he’s a burly Canadian that looks (and sounds) like he stepped out of a lumberyard. It’s not often we get such exaggerated characters in the UFC anymore, but if you miss Roy Nelson then Boser is your guy. He gets Andrei Arlovski, who is forever protecting his chin from getting shattered.

We also want to mention a welterweight scrap between Carlos Condit and Court McGee. A former WEC champ, Condit is from a different era - he fought GSP at his peak, Dan Hardy and Nick Diaz. The Natural Born Killer probably should’ve hung ‘em up a few years ago, but the 36-year old has trudged on the tune of five straight losses. Perhaps he can turn things around against Court McGee, whose best years also came from the early 2010s. It would be nice to see either guy retire after a win.
