Marvin Vettori, step right up. It was supposed to be Darren Till taking on Hermansson in the headliner, but Till got hurt and then it was Kevin Holland taking his place. Holland tested positive for the virus and now it is Vettori. It has been nothing but cancellations for Vettori lately, as he was supposed to fight Darren Stewart in March, but that event was cancelled. He was supposed to fight Karl Roberson in May but that fight was postponed to June and it was Vettori getting a submission win. Vettori was set to face Ronaldo Souza at UFC 256, but Vettori couldn’t pass up a headliner, so he took this fight against Hermansson on short notice. Vettori has looked good lately with three straight wins. He defeated Roberson in June, Andrew Sanchez in October of last year and Cezar Ferreira in July of last year.
This is dangerous ground for Hermansson against a tough opponent who could punt the Swede out the title mix entirely. Reminder: Hermansson is 5-1 in his past six, including wins over Jacare Souza and Kelvin Gastelum. Had he faced and beat Till, that would have been a solid case for a shot at the strap. But beating Vettori? That’s baseline expectations. And if he struggles in doing so, that hurts him too. Anything but a convincing win is a disappointment.
Speaking of prospects, we’ve also got an undefeated light heavyweight prospect in Jamahal Hill taking a massive step up in competition against Ovince St. Preux. Like Holland, Hill also comes from DWCS, earning his UFC ticket with a TKO over Alexander Poppeck. In his UFC debut, the 29-year old scored a decision over Darko Stosic, then most recently knocked out Klidson Abreu in less than two minutes.
OSP has fought everybody worth fighting at 205 pounds, and the longtime vet is now playing gatekeeper. At 37, St. Preux is nearing the end of his career, but he’s still a dangerous dude who can finish anywhere. Case in point: in his last two wins, he used a shoulder choke to sub a basher in Michal Oleksiejczuk and knocked out Alonzi Menifield with a single punch. Hill has a lot to be worried about here.
