UFC Fight Night: Eye vs. Calvillo Betting

Is any UFC better than no UFC? The easy answer might be duh, of course, but a Fight Night event headlined by Jessica Eye and Cynthia Calvillo is really pushing it. Nothing against either main event fighter, but this is a matchup that could be on the prelims of a solid card and nobody would bat an eye.

UFC Fight Night: Eye vs. Calvillo

Date: Saturday, June 13, 2020

Venue: UFC APEX

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Calvillo is coming off a majority draw against an unheralded Marina Rodriguez. You could make the argument that the 32-year old is a fringe contender - her 8-1-1 record certainly is shiny. But she has yet to earn a signature win at 115 pounds, dropping a 2017 decision loss to Carla Esparza in her biggest career fight. Wins over Cortney Casey, Poliana Botelho, JoJo Carlderwood and Pearl Gonzalez show that Calvillo at the very least is an upper tier fighter.

Eye was completely dominated by champion Valentina Shevchenko in a 2019 title fight. That she even fought for the title in the first place speaks to how shallow the weight class is. While Eye had won three in a row going into the matchup, two of those were split decision wins and she didn’t look particularly exciting in any of them. She bounced back from the Shevchenko loss with a win over Viviane Aruajo, and now Eye hopes to shut down Calvillo’s first foray at 125 pounds.

The story here is Calvillo is a former strawweight prospect looking to make waves at flyweight. She’s had repeated troubles making 115 pounds, so the thinking here is that she’ll perform better without having to suffer a huge weight cut. If Calvillo makes a big statement against Eye, she takes a huge step up in the rankings - it doesn’t take much to earn a title shot in this division.

The supporting lineup isn’t much to write home about. A middleweight scrap between Marvin Vettori and Karl Roberson is a fun little prospect matchup, but it’s going to be a while before either guy becomes a player at 185 pounds. Featherweight Andre Fili is a reliable action fighter, and he’ll be playing gatekeeper against Canada’s Charles Jourdain. The 24-year old Jourdain is a promising prospect, with a TKO win over Doo Ho Choi.

There are a good number of women’s prospects at different weight classes getting a chance to shine. Mariya Agapova is a young fighter from Kazakhstan that trains at American Top Team, and she’s matching up against an undefeated Melissaa Gatto. Lord knows the 125-pound division needs new talent as Shevchenko looks set to run away with the division.

Julia Alvila is a  7-1 bantamweight coming off a successful UFC debut. She’ll meet Karol Rosa, who also just won her first UFC fight against Lara Procipo. 26-year old Luana Carolina has won six straight since losing her pro debut, and that includes a win over Priscila Cachoeira in promotional debut. Carolina gets a development bout against Ariane Lipski, who is just 1-2 in the UFC so far.

The hastily put-together card is pretty much final, but there could be a few changes leading up to fight night. Don’t expect a major matchup to be added though, as the UFC has confirmed that Eye vs. Calvillo is the night’s headliner. To be honest, this is about as strong as a DWCS card.
