Edwards comes into this fight with a record of 18-3 with six wins coming by knockout and three by submission. He has won his last eight fights and he has had some impressive wins of late, beating Donald Cerrone by unanimous decision in June of 2018, winning by split decision against Gunnar Nelson in March of 2019 and he won a unanimous decision against Rafael dos Anjos in July of 2019. It will have been almost two years since Edwards fought dos Anjos, but he is still listed as more than a 2-1 favorite over Muhammad.
Muhammad comes into this fight with a record of 18-3 with four wins by knockout and one by submission. He won a unanimous decision against Dhiego Lima in February, won by unanimous decision against Lyman Good in June of last year, won by submission against Takashi Sato in September of 2019 and won by unanimous decision against Curtis Millender in April of 2019. The last loss for Muhammad came against Geoff Neal in January of 2019.
Muhammad has not had much time off, as he just fought in February against Lima, while Edwards has had a ton of time off. Muhammad is pleased to be fighting in a high-profile spot, even on short notice. “I knew that during these times, anything could happen,” Muhammad said to the media, “So I was like, stay ready so when you do get that call, you’ll be able to say, yeah. I hoped that it would happen like this. Nowadays, these high-ranked guys, none of these guys want to take fights.”
Muhammad has a big chance to move up in the rankings with a win over Edwards. “This is that moment where, I asked for it,” Muhammad said to the media, “You’re always seeing it in your head happening a certain way. I thought it was going to be a longer road, but the fact that it came so quick, beautiful. I don’t have to go through 13 other guys to get to No. 3, I can just go straight to No. 3, win this fight, and get a title fight.”
