UFC Fight Night: Covington vs. Woodley

Date: Saturday, September 19, 2020

Venue: UFC Apex

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Whether you like trash talking or not, you’re gonna get a lot of it between Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington leading up to their highly anticipated headlining matchup. Expect to hear about MAGA, BLM, Blue Lives Matter, Trump vs. Biden...literally every touchy political topic you can think of. Because that’s how these dudes roll, and that’s what’s going to ultimately sell the fight. Buy into it or tune out as you please - but there’s no denying that this is a compelling matchup.

These dudes hate each other, and that alone is reason enough to watch them scrap. But the stakes for both men are staggering. Woodley is coming off consecutive losses where he was completely dominated from pillar to post - 50 minutes of Usman and Burns teeing off on him with alarmingly little resistance. Considering how Covington fights, there’s a good chance it happens again here, but Woodley has an opportunity to reverse that narrative and prove that he still belongs in the elite tier.

Covington is fighting for the first time since his failed title fight with Usman. In case you forgot, the champ broke his jaw in the process. The 32-year old can bounce back with a big win against the former champ, and you know that his mouth is going to make sure the lights shine bright on this scrap. That also means there are a lot of people rooting against him, and losing to a fighter who has looked terrible recently would give his haters a ton of fuel.

We’re also looking forward to the light heavyweight contest between Johnny Walker and Ryan Spann. Walker’s hype was blown by Corey Anderson and Nikita Krylov. The thing is, he’s still 6’5” and a ridiculous athlete who loves to throw high-risk strikes. That’s something we’re always down to watch. Ryan Spann is also 6’5”, but more of a submission specialist. He comes in on an eight fight win streak, which includes four appearances inside the octagon. The bad news? He needed a split decision win to get by journeyman Sam Alvey.

For a minute, Mackenzie Dern looked like overblown hype, but she came back from her maternity leave and burned Hannah Cifers in one round. Now, the decorated jiu-jitsu ace gets gatekeeper Randa Markos - who is far, far better than her 10-8 record suggests. A solid wrestler, Markos is a compelling test for Dern.

Lastly, we need to mention heavyweight Ciryl Gane. The Frenchman is 6-0, 6’5” and a ripped 265 pounds. Like Francis Ngannou, Gane just looks like he was dreamed up by a 12-year old in a video game Create a Fighter Mode. The 30-year old has won all three of his UFC fights but takes a huge step up against Dagestan’s Shamil Abdurakhimov.
