UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan

Date: Saturday, August 1, 2020

Venue: UFC Apex

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Derek Brunson is a great example of a very successful UFC fighter despite never having reached the title mix. As a fixture at 185 pounds, Brunson has stepped into the cage against the likes Robert Whittaker, Anderson Silva, Jacare Souza and Israel Adesanya. The catch? He lost to all of those guys, pretty much cementing his place as a Tier 2 middleweight. There’s no shame in that - you’ve got to be a really good fighter to stick around the UFC for this long and fight the best dudes in the division.

He is without a doubt one of the best gatekeepers at 185 pounds, and he is still plenty capable of beating high level guys. Right now, Brunson is the guy that you need to beat to get to the top tier. That’s exactly the type of win that his opponent, Edmen Shahbazyan, needs to jump in with the big boys.

Shahbazyan trains out of Glendale Fighting Club, and is the most exciting prospect in the division. Just 22 years old and already 11-0, Shahbazyan is a next gen fighter that started training in MMA when he was 10 years old, and Ronda Rousey was one of his main training partners. He has finished all four of his opponents since joining the UFC. That includes a submission win over the veteran Jack Marshman, and a first-round KO over Brad Tavares - a respected veteran renowned for his trademark Hawaiian toughness.

This kid is already scary good, with the confidence and skills to take and end the fight anywhere. If the Armenian-American can beat Brunson, the world’s his oyster. There are tons of big names to look at, from Jared Cannnier to Kelvin Gastelum to Yoel Romero to Jared Cannonier.

We also like the welterweight contest between Vicente Luque and Randy “Rude Boy” Brown. Luque was creeping into the contender ranks with a six fight winning streak, but a loss to Stephen Thompson last year stopped his advance cold. However, he bounced back nicely with a TKO against Niko Price, who is one of the more intriguing prospects in a loaded division. The Brazilian is low-key one of the funnest fighters to watch, as he’s all pressure and tons of high-flying, high-risk striking maneuvers.

Jamaica’s Brown is somebody that is big and athletic enough to always be intriguing. Right now, he’s on a two-fight finishing streak, which could mean the start of something big. We know that Luque is going to force the issue here, so it’ll be compelling to see if Brown can step up and prove that he deserves a spot in the rankings.
