UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Volkov Betting
Curtis Blaydes is playing the long game to a heavyweight title shot. Not by choice: Covid19, the delayed rematch between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, and the surging Francis Ngannou have all combined to put Blaydes on the backburner. Obviously, he’s hoping that a long winning streak will make him impossible to ignore.
UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Volkov
Date: Saturday, June 20, 2020
Venue: UFC APEX
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Here’s the problem with that: when you’re a top contender like Blaydes, stringing together victories becomes increasingly difficult. Especially in a division where everybody can knock out everybody. Blaydes has won three straight since a knockout loss to Ngannou, and most recently he finished former champion Junior Dos Santos within two rounds. If things were business as usual, Blaydes would likely be fighting for the strap.
Instead, “Razor” is headlining a matchup against Alexander Volkov at the UFC Apex on June 20. That’s a great fight against a high ranked opponent. Volkov is 5-1 in the UFC, with wins over Big Country, Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve. His only loss was a total fluke, as the Russian was knocked out by Derrick Lewis hail mary in the final seconds of a contest he was handily winning.
For Volkov, this is a chance to leap into the title picture. Beating the No. 3 Blaydes would put him right behind Cormier and Ngannou. For Blaydes, this is another opportunity to prove that he deserves a shot at the belt. Right now, Ngannou seems like the front-runner after a DC-Miocic rematch (he also holds two wins over Blaydes), but the winner of this matchup could force a title eliminator against him.
The rest of the card is solid, starting with a featherweight tilt between Josh Emmett and Shane Burgos. Both 145-pounders are looking like emerging factors in a stacked weight class: Emmett has won two straight, knocking out both Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic coming into the matchup. Burgos has won three consecutive matchups, following up a split decision win over Cub Swanson with a TKO over Makwan Amirkhani. Both men are at the lower end of the top 10, but could start a climb into the top 5 here.
We’re also eyeing a women’s strawweight fight Brianna Van Buren and Tecia Torres. Van Buren is a 26-year old prospect in a stacked division, and after a successful UFC debut she’s taking a huge step up in competition. Torres is the division’s best-known gatekeeper, as four of the five fighters that beat her went on to win the title. Does the 4’11” Van Buren have what it takes to make waves in a division that features the likes of Jedrzjeczyk, Namajunas, Zhang, Andrade and Suarez?
The other matchups should provide plenty of action. Lyman Good is a huge welterweight that can’t seem to utilize his size to get consistent wins. He’ll be meeting Belal Muhammad, who is quietly 6-1 in his past seven. Roxanne Modafferi’s last two wins came against Antonina Shevchenko and Maycee Barber, and she’ll meet Lauren Murphy - who just defeated rising star Andrea Lee. Women’s flyweight is a division where it only takes a few strong wins to rise into title contention, so this could be an important matchup for either.
