Anthony Pettis is trying out yet another weight class, and we’re totally with it. The former lightweight champ, who made a stop at featherweight, will now move up to welterweight to meet contender Stephen Thompson. The matchup headlines a solid night of fights in Nashville.
Just 3-6 in his last nine fights, “Showtime” is probably realizing that another title run is out of reach. But with a recognizable name and an awesome highlight reel, the 32-year old can still carve out a role as a big fight mercenary. On the surface, taking on Thompson would produce fireworks - these are two awesome strikers with flashy styles.
It’s a slick move: Pettis could instantly become a welterweight contender with a win over the No. 4 Thompson. If he gets pieced up, then he loses against a bigger guy and doesn’t lose much shine. Thompson gets a chance to bounce back from a contentious loss to Darren Till against a popular opponent.
Also on the card is heavyweight prospect Curtis Blaydes, who just had his title hopes popped by Francis Ngannou. He’ll look to get back on his horse against Justin Willis, who is basically another Mark Hunt - a fat guy with brutal knockout power. Though Blaydes was quickly knocked out, many still see him as a future contender. A second straight loss could be devastating to his standing at heavyweight.

Thompson has promised to be more aggressive going forward. That’s something we’ve heard from a lot of guys, and we know just how hard it is to back those kinds of words up. But given that he’s facing a smaller guy who will challenge him at his strength, there’s a great chance that we might see the lethal kicker that carved up Johnny Hendricks while looking like he was trying out for a Matrix remake.
Pettis is coming off a Fight of the Year contender against Tony Ferguson, but man he took a beating in that fight. At 32, he’s no longer the young powerhouse, and more a hard-nosed veteran - one who can still notch the highlight reel victory. He’s got to know that he’s being gifted an awesome opportunity here, though he will be fighting an uphill battle as an underdog in the online sportsbooks.
Justin Willis outstruck Mark Hunt. Think about that for a second. It takes a lot to beat a former K-1 champion at his strength, and his heavy hands and portly frame could cause Curtis Blaydes some serious problems. It’s hard to picture a big guy like Willis becoming a title contender, but this is the same division which Derrick Lewis fought for the title. It could happen.
20-year old Maycee Barber is an undefeated strawweight prospect coming off a successful octagon debut. But to make some noise in a deep division, she’ll have to prove that she’s not all hype against veteran JJ Aldrich. With five finishes in six pro fights, Barber could make a name for herself as a bona fide stopper in a weight class where finishes don’t come often.
