The UFC must really love Boise, Idaho. What else explains the absolutely loaded Fight Night card the city’s getting on July 14? In the main event, we’ve got former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos welcoming WSOF heavyweight champion Blagoy Ivanov to the UFC. You might not know who Ivanov is, but any matchup featuring high level heavyweights is a treat for MMA fans.

Dos Santos has had an up-and-down run since getting thrashed twice by Cain Velasquez, but the fact remains that his only other losses in the UFC have come against Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem. The Brazilian is still one of the best boxers in the division, and the man’s hands can put anyone out. Ivanov enters the matchup with five straight wins, with victories over UFC vets like Lavar Johnson, Shawn Jordan and Ricco Rodriguez.

Also on this card is James Vick, whose making waves as a prospect in a loaded lightweight division. Former featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes returns from a PEDS suspension against Myles Jury, and we’ll see if we can slot him right back into the 145-pound title mix. We’ve also got Darren Elkins, one of the most violent featherweights around, against the 17-1 Alexander Volkanovski.

What to Watch For

While there’s not much starpower here, this card is packed with great fighters and compelling scraps. Blagoy Ivanov is jumping right into the shark tank, and taking out a guy like Junior Dos Santos would be a huge statement. We’ll see whether he can hold his own in the UFC, as he’s a relatively small heavyweight.

James Vick is a 6’3” lightweight whose not a total beanpole - and the man can crack. “The Texecutioner” put away a good boxer in Joe Duffy and scored a unanimous decision over another banger in Francisco Trinaldo. Now he meets the well-respected Paul Felder, who has three straight finishes via elbows. Whoever wins here gets a shot at a top-10 guy at 155.

Chad Mendes hasn’t fought since losing to Frankie Edgar in 2015. Getting popped by USADA will make you disappear for a while. But this is a guy who was a top 5 featherweight for years, challenging twice for the title and even fighting Conor McGregor at some point. Now 33, he’ll get tested by Myles Jury, who is 17-2 and looking to score the biggest win of his career.

Darren Elkins is one of the toughest damn fighters in the business, and his last three fights are proof. After scoring the comeback of the year against Mirsad Bektic, he grinded out a split decision over Dennis Bermudez and rallied back against Michael Johnson. That’s back-to-back-to-back wins where he took tons of punishment and dug deep to rally back. Now he meets Alexander Volkanovski, whose on a 14-fight winning streak.
