Poirier is 27-6 in his career, including 4-1 in his last five bouts. He is coming off a TKO win against McGregor in January. Poirier won a unanimous decision against Dan Hooker in June of last year, lost by submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov in September of 2019, won a unanimous decision against Max Holloway in April of 2019 and won by TKO against Eddie Alvarez in July of 2018.
McGregor is 22-5 in his career, including 3-2 in his last five fights. He is coming off a TKO loss to Poirier in January. McGregor won by TKO against Donald Cerrone in January of 2020, lost by submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October of 2018, won by TKO against Eddie Alvarez in November of 2016 and won by majority decision against Nate Diaz in August of 2016.
Poirier took out McGregor back in January and Poirier’s boxing coach Dyah Davis said the trilogy will be very similar. “I take this approach as if a lumberjack, we’re in a forest,” Davis said to the media, “The idea is to chop the tree down from the bottom and that’s exactly what we did. It’s a fight. So we look for any weaknesses that we could take advantage of and that was one of them. So we capitalized and we moved on from there and ended up finishing him with strikes. I think it’ll play out similar to the second fight, maybe a little bit longer. I see us executing and getting a KO victory in the third round.”
Another big fight has Gilbert Burns taking on Stephen Thompson. Burns is 19-4 in his career with six wins coming by knockout and eight by submission. Thompson is 16-4 in his career, with seven wins coming by knockout and one by submission.
Burns said to the media that the fight against Thompson could end in an exciting finish. “..if me or ‘Wonderboy’ get a big finish, it could put us close to a title shot.”
Another key fight has Tai Tuivasa taking on Greg Hardy. Tuivasa is 11-3 in his career with 10 wins coming by knockout, while Hardy is 7-3 with six wins coming by knockout and one by submission.
This fight is another one that doesn’t figure to last long, as Tuivasa and Hardy have combined for 17 knockouts.
