Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will defend his title against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261: Usman vs. Masvidal 2 on Saturday, April 24. Usman is 18-1 in his career with 8 knockouts and one submission. He is 5-0 in his last five fights. He is coming off a TKO against Gilbert Burns in February. He won a unanimous decision against Masvidal last July, won by TKO against Colby Covington in December of 2019, won by unanimous decision against Tyron Woodley in March of 2019 and won a unanimous decision against Rafael dos Anjos in November of 2018.
Usman won the first meeting against Masvidal, but it was not as impressive as he wanted. “I was still able to get the win, but not in the way that I wanted. He had a built-in excuse, to where I kind of had to rectify that one." Usman said to the media, "I don't think I broke him in the way I wanted to break him. And so that's really what I'm after."
Masvidal is 35-14 in his career with 16 knockouts and two submissions. He is 3-2 in his last five fights. He is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Usman in July of last year.
Masvidal won by TKO against Nate Diaz in November of 2019, won by knockout against Ben Askren in July of 2019, won by knockout against Darren Till in March of 2019 and lost a unanimous decision to Stephen Thompson in November of 2017.
Masvidal had to cut a lot of weight in a short time for the first meeting against Usman. This time around Masvidal said he is more prepared. “I’m not going to cut 20 pounds of weight now, mainly of water, in six days,” Masvidal said to the media, “As I stand right now I’m eight, nine pounds before I hit the mark of 170. So it’s a different weight cut altogether. That’s going to be the main determining factor I think.”
Another big fight on the card has current strawweight champion Zhang Weili taking on former champion Rose Namajunas. Weili is 21-1 in her career with 10 knockouts and 7 submissions while Namajunas is 9-4 in her career with one knockout and 5 submissions.
Another key fight has flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko taking on former champion Jessica Andrade. Shevchenko is 20-3 in her career with 6 knockouts and 7 submissions, while Andrade is 21-8 in her career with 8 knockouts and 7 submissions.
