A UFC Light Heavyweight Championship fight between current champion Jan Blachowicz and current UFC Middleweight champ Israel Adesanya headlines UFC 259: Blachowichz vs. Adesanya on Saturday, March 6 at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. It could be a history making fight for Adesanya who is looking to hold title belts in two divisions at the same time. Only four other fighters in UFC history have done that. Blachowicz comes into this fight with a record of 27-8 with 8 wins by knockout and 9 by submission. He has won his last four fights, defeating Dominick Reyes by TKO at UFC 253 to win the UFC Light Heavyweight title, knocked out Corey Anderson in February of last year, won a split decision against Ronaldo Souza in November of 2019 and knocked out Luke Rockhold at UFC 239 in July of 2019. The last loss by Blachowicz was against Thiago Santos in February of 2019.
Adesanya comes into this fight with a record of 20-0 with 15 of those wins coming by knockout. His last five wins were against Paulo Costa by TKO at UFC 253 in September of last year, Yoel Romero by unanimous decision in March of 2020, knocked out Robert Whittaker in October of 2019, won by unanimous decision against Kelvin Gastelum in April of 2019 and won a unanimous decision against Anderson Silva in February of 2019.
Moving up to 205 pounds is risky for Adesanya but it is also a great situation for him, as he is getting a high-profile opponent, he could make history and the matchup is really good for him in terms of style. Blachowicz is decent on the mat, but he doesn’t figure to take down Adesanya in this fight. There is no doubt that Adesanya is a better stand-up fighter and he should be able to continue to hurt Blachowicz throughout this bout.
Another big fight on the card has Amanda Nunes defending her UFC Women’s Featherweight title against Megan Anderson. These two were supposed to fight at UFC 256 but Nunes pulled out due to injury. Nunes is 20-4 and she has won her last 11 fights, while Anderson is 11-4.
Another fight of note has Petr Yan defending his UFC Bantamweight title against Aljamain Sterling. These two were supposed to meet at UFC 259, but Yan had to pull out due to visa issues. Yan is 15-1 including 7-0 in the UFC, while Sterling is 19-3 and on a five-fight winning streak.
