UFC 257: Poirier vs. McGregor II

Date: Saturday, January 23, 2021

Venue: UFC Fight Island

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

Conor McGregor is back. That’s a sentence that will always reverberate not just in MMA, but in the sports world. While he might not be the champ, the Irishman is a mainstream superstar - right up there with the Lebron James and the Lionel Messis of the world. And getting him to headline the first pay-per-view of 2021 could mean huge things for the UFC.

Almost one year after crushing Cowboy Cerrone and UFC 246, McGregor will meet a familiar face in Dustin Poirier in the UFC’s first pay-per-view of 2021. By now, you know the story: the pair first met at featherweight in 2014. After an emotional, heated buildup, McGregor needed less than two minutes to floor Poirier and bounce his head off the canvas. But so much has changed since then. That fight took place at featherweight, and it was only McGregor’s fourth UFC appearance - he was only a megahyped prospect at the time. Poirier was a prospect in his own right, but was just 25 at the time - a far cry from final form.

Now, the two fighters will face each other at the peak of their careers. Both men are a win removed from failed title bids to Khabib Nurmagomedov. But with the Russian seemingly retired, this fight will likely determine the next title challenger. You can bet the UFC is hoping for a McGregor win to set up a rematch with Khabib that would likely be the highest selling pay-per-view in MMA history. But Dustin Poirier is an elite fighter in his own right, with his last five wins coming against a murderer’s row in Dan Hooker, Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Anthony Pettis. McGregor has never been on a five-fight run like that.

For the casuals, this is about as a fan-friendly matchup as it gets. Dustin regularly puts on Fight of the Year contenders - he’s incredibly tough and willing to engage in brutal wars. Conor’s brand of finesse and power is unmatched. This could go five bloody rounds or end in just a few minutes, but there’s no way this disappoints. The UFC odds are heavily favoring McGregor, opening with the Irishman as a -222 favorite, with Poirier at +174 on the comeback.

It’s not a deep card, but the co-main event is special too: former Bellator champion Michael Chandler finally makes his UFC debut. Long seen as one of the best fighters not fighting in the octagon, there’s a lot of anticipation to see how he fares against the top of the UFC’s best division. He was famously the injury backup for Khabib-Dustin, but never got a chance to hop into action as both guys came through healthy. Chandler gets thrown right into the fire against No. 6 Dan Hooker, who is coming off a five-round throwdown with Poirier. If Chandler or Hooker really impresses on pay-per-view, it’s easy to see the UFC riding the momentum and throwing them in a title shot with the McGregor-Poirier winner.
