UFC 254: Khabib vs. Gaethje

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2020

Venue: UFC Fight Island

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

Khabib Nurmagomedov is doing things that no other lightweight in MMA history has done. He’s already the best 155-pounder to ever step inside the octagon - an insane accomplishment considering how good that weight class has been. He’s never lost a pro fight in 28 appearances. Hell, he’s barely lost a round against world-class competition. The Russian has done the rare thing where he’s become a myth while he’s still fighting. MMA fans know they are watching generational talent at its peak every time they tune into a Khabib fight.

Now, it’s Justin Gaethje’s turn to try and break a seemingly unbreakable fighter. The popular sentiment in the MMA world is that he might just be the best equipped fighter to do so. People point to his NCAA wrestling background and how he masterfully uses his hips to defend takedowns. They’ll see how much damage he can do with a single leg kick, and emphasize how it’s a core part of his offense. Of course they’ll mention his iron chin and warrior spirt.

But let’s be real: the octagon is Khabib’s world until proven otherwise. Considering how good he’s been, it would be a bizarre sight to see him face any real adversity. We hope to god that it’s a thriller, but there’s an excellent chance that The Eagle puts Justin on his back and goes to work - same as it’s always been.

The UFC odds opened with Nurmagomedov as a -281 favorite, with Gaethje at +215 on the comeback. We wouldn’t be surprised if Gaethje ends up closer to +250.

Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya called out Jared Cannonier as his next title defense, provided The Killa Gorilla beats former champion Robert Whittaker. Easier said than done, but Cannonier is one of those dudes who has the athleticism to overwhelm just about anybody. In his past three fights, the 36-year old has stopped David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson. Not really a murderer’s row, but it’s definitely notable.

Whittaker lost his title to Izzy in a fight where he was straight up spanked, but he was able to score a win over Darren Till in his last outing. That puts him in a weird spot: inside the top 3 but far away from a rematch against Izzy. It would likely take a few more wins for another shot at the strap, but a loss here could set him back years - and possibly close his title window shut for good. There’s a lot at stake for the Aussie.

We also have to bring up the rematch between Magomed Ankalaev and Ion Cutelaba. This has become the poor man’s version of Khabib-Ferguson, as it’s been cancelled multiple times for a variety of reasons. Their first fight was so good and so heated that we’ve been dying for a conclusion, and we know that it’s gonna be ridiculously violent.
