UFC 253: Adesanya vs. Costa

Date: Saturday, September 26, 2020

Venue: UFC Fight Island

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE

Somebody’s “0” has got to go. Somebody has to walk away with the middleweight belt. Somebody is going to be humbled. There are a lot of storylines to love when it comes to the 185-pound title match between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa. Our favorite is this: Adesanya is the most talented technical striker the division has seen since Anderson Silva, and Paolo Costa doesn’t care - his plan is to bulldoze the champ under an unyielding barrage of power punches.

After the Adesanya-Romero stinker, the MMA world is praying that Costa’s ultra-aggressive style will lead to some fireworks. If the Brazilian had the onions to march down Yoel Romero, it’s likely he’ll start sprinting at Adesanya as soon as the cage doors close. Adesanya is at his best when he’s reacting to his opponents, and he’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so here.

The table is set for memorable violence - let’s hope these dudes start feasting. They’ve definitely done their part to turn this into a grudge match.

In the co-main event, Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz fight for the vacant light heavyweight title. For the first time in years, the 205-pound class moves forward without kingpin Jon Jones, who held the division hostage for more than a decade. We love how wide open everything feels, but the caveat here is that these guys are fighting for Bones’ table scraps. There’s a huge opportunity for the 30-year old Reyes to become the man at 205, especially after many felt that he beat Jones.

He’s got the tools - but can he separate himself from the pack? No disrespect to Blachowicz, who is an excellent fighter, but the Pole would’ve been cannon fodder for Jones. I’d venture that most MMA fans feel his qualifications for a title shot rest on how shallow the division is than how good he is. But hey, maybe he can surprise us all at 37 years old.

Flying under the radar is a featherweight scrap between “Mean” Hakeem Dawodu and Zubaira Tukhogov. While Tukhugov is best known for being Khabib’s training partner (and getting suspended for the infamous post-fight brawl with McGregor), he’s got a chance to shine against a solid prospect in Dawodu. Conversely, this could be a breakout moment for Dawodu, an up-and-coming fighter out of Canada. But aside from a head kick TKO, Dawodu really hasn’t done much to distinguish himself despite a 4-1 record inside the octagon. Let’s see if he can level up his game at all. The Great White North is still starving for an MMA star since GSP retired.
