UFC 246: Conor McGregor Returns to Meet Cowboy Cerrone

UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cowboy Betting

The UFC’s first pay-per-view of 2020 will feature the sport’s biggest star. Conor McGregor will return to action at UFC 246 on January 18 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Standing across from him in the main event matchup will be the popular Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The two have agreed to fight at welterweight - a division where both men have dabbled in recent years.

UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cowboy Betting

Date: Saturday, January 18th, 2020

Venue: T-Mobile Arena

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

McGregor hasn’t fought since losing a title match to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018. The Irishman was beaten from pillar to post, suffocating under the Russian’s unstoppable wrestling and tapping to a fourth round neck crank. To his credit, The Notorious one did become the first man to win a round against Khabib - though he did little to actually threaten the champ.

Since then, McGregor has stayed active outside the cage, promoting his whiskey brand and getting into minor legal troubles. We can skip over the details, but it’s clear that the 31-year old is a very rich, very busy man that doesn’t have to fight again. That he’s taking a matchup with Cerrone suggests that he’s got big plans for 2020 inside the octagon.

While Cowboy is a popular fighter, he’s hardly considered a top contender at this point. The 36-year old comes into the contest with two straight losses against Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje. Against Ferguson, he took so much damage that the doctor had to call it off before the start of the third frame. Gaethje knocked him out cold in less than one round.

Cerrone is no pushover, but on paper this looks like a tuneup fight for McGregor. It’s been three years since his last win inside the cage, and Cowboy has never looked more vulnerable. Beating Cerrone still means something, and McGregor is probably already calculating who he wants to call out next. He’ll have no shortage of willing opponents looking for a Red Panty Night.

McGregor’s name alone is enough to carry a card, and the UFC isn’t putting much of a supporting cast around this one. As of early December, the supporting cast’s most-well-known commodities are Holly Holm and Anthony Pettis.

The card is still being filled out, but we’ll keep you updated as more contests get added to the card. Make sure to check in during fight week for in-depth online betting previews. UFC Betting Odds from BookMaker.eu are typically released on Monday before each event - though big fight bookings are usually available much earlier. Oddsmakers opened with McGregor as a sizeable -255 favorite, with Cowboy at +197 on the comeback. We only see this gap growing between the two, especially during fight week when McGregor’s massive fan base starts betting heavy. If you were going to go with the Irishman, a bet right now would be smart before his line goes down further.

The fact that Cowboy was knocked out in his past two fights do not bode well for the vet. Media and fans alike were quick to point out that this is a bad matchup for Cerrone, as he’s increasingly looked tentative against killshot hitters. Of course, he’s also made a habit of bouncing back when we’re ready to write him off, and this is one of the most experienced strikers in the game.

Anthony Pettis is coming off a loss to Nate Diaz, which puts him in no-man’s land once again. He’s still one of the better-known fighters on the roster, but is just 4-7 since 2014. After three huge fights against Ferguson, Wonderboy and Diaz, Pettis meets the unheralded Diego Ferreira. This is a dangerous matchup for Showtime, as the Brazilian has one five straight and is looking to use the former champ as a springboard into the contender ranks.
