UFC 244: Usman vs. Covington Odds
By now, we’re all very familiar with Colby Covington’s persona: MAGA spiels, appearances involving scantily clad women, calling haters virgins or soy boys, and xenophobic comments. It’s getting old, but playing the heel has worked out perfectly in his favor - the ATT product fights for the title this November at Madison Square Garden.

Event: UFC 244: Usman vs. Covington
Date: Saturday, November 2nd, 2019
Venue: Madison Square Garden
Location: New York City, New York, USA
Standing across from him will be champion Kamaru Usman, and the contrast between the two seems almost too perfect. Usman is a Nigerian-born immigrant, and he’s taken Colby’s #buildthewall attitude personally, stating that “it’s the wrath of every immigrant in this country that I’m going to put on him.”
The beef is real: the morning after winning the welterweight title against Tyron Woodley, Usman ran into Covington at the buffet in The Palms - a situation that nearly triggered a brawl. They’ve been circling each other for years now, and they’ll settle the score in the most famous fight venue in the world. While neither champion nor challenger has broken out as a mainstream star that casuals would recognize, the fight scenario is an easy sell.
Dana White knows that any pay-per-view at MSG has to be big, and the UFC has already booked an excellent supporting cast that includes Kelvin Gastelum, Darren Till, Johnny Walker and Derrick Lewis.

Despite Usman and Covington’s physical differences, there are actually a lot of similarities between the two as fighters. Both come from a decorated collegiate wrestling backgrounds: Usman earned DII All-American honors three years straight, andbecame a national champion in 2010. Covington won the junior college wrestling title as a true freshman, then went to OSU where he became an All-American and a two-time Pac-10 conference champion.
Both men are at their best when they are overwhelming their opponents with a relentless storm of strikes and takedowns. With their best skills canceling each other out, this matchup looks like it’ll come down to cardio and grit. Somebody is going to force the other to quit in this matchup, which is why it’s so compelling.
Darren Till moves up to middleweight after serious weight cutting issues at 170, and he’s jumping right into the fire with a matchup against Kelvin Gastelum. It wasn’t that long ago that Gastelum gave Israel Adesanya all he could handle. Till is coming off two straight blowout losses - suffering finishes in each - but the thinking here is that he’ll capitalize on his tremendous potential without having to suffer a ghastly weight cut. He needs to look no further than his opponent for affirmation: Gastelum was once a welterweight himself before really taking off at 185 pounds.
Johnny Walker has the swag and personality of a superstar, and he certainly looks the part of a future title contender: 27 years old, 6’5”, shredded and an excellent athlete. The kid has blasted through all three of his UFC opponents in spectacular fashion, but now takes a step up against Corey Anderson, a legitimate gatekeeper to the top tier. If the Brazilian gets through Corey Anderson, a title shot might not be far off.
Derrick Lewis is hands down the UFC’s funniest man, but he hasn’t found much to smile about lately as he’s been finished in two straight fights. His unlikely run to a title shot still has a fluky feel to it, but perhaps he can recapture the magic against Blagoy Ivanov. If anything, stay for the legendary post-fight interviews.
