Event: UFC 242: Khabib vs. Poirier

Date: Saturday, September 7th, 2019

Venue: The Arena

Location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Khabib Nurmagomedov became a superstar by beating the superstar, Conor McGregor. Unfortunately for the Russian, temporary insanity took over as he launched a flying eagle kick immediately after the fight and the new champ got himself suspended for a year.

While The Eagle was grounded, the lightweight division found itself a new interim champion: the ultra-violent Dustin Poirier. At 30 years old, Poirier has put together one of the most impressive lightweight resumes in recent memory, culminating in a six-fight unbeaten streak that includes wins over Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez and Max Holloway. On top of that, each of those wins were all-out wars that displayed Poirier’s unbendable will, destructive power and a steel chin.

This is a superfight - any fight with Khabib at this point is. On the line is the Russian’s undisputed title, undefeated record and an incomparable aura of invincibility. In fact, we’re still waiting for him to go through any real adversity in the cage.

The matchup headlines UFC 242, which takes place in the MMA-crazed region of Abu Dhabi. Supporting the main event is a lightweight matchup between Edson Barboza and Paul Felder, Nurmagomedov’s teammate Islam Makachev, heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes and rising women’s flyweight Andrea “KGB” Lee.

The card is still being filled out, but we’ll keep you updated as more contests get added to the card. Make sure to check in during fight week for in-depth online betting previews. UFC Odds from BookMaker.eu are typically released on Monday before each event - though big fight bookings are usually available much earlier. The UFC odds at our online sportsbook opened with Nurmagomedov as a big -375 favorite with Poirier at +280 on the comeback. Not many people are expecting Dustin to win, but if he can even give the champ a tough fight many will take that as a win. Poirier has been tagged a few times before, but has never been put in danger nor has he come close to actually losing. Poirier is an expert and turning fights into a scorched earth war, and it’ll be awesome to see Khabib finally compete in a fight he doesn’t completely dominate.

We’ve talked about how violent Poirier is, but lightweight Edson Barboza has also produced his fair share iconic highlights. As one of the most athletic lightweights on the roster, a classic stoppage could come at any time. Matching him up with Paul Felder is matchmaking genius, as Felder is as willing as anyone to go flashy strike vs. flashy strike with Barboza.

Curtis Blaydes was right on the door of a heavyweight title shot, but a quick knockout at the hands of Francis Ngannou hit pause on his title hopes. But in the UFC heavyweight division, any ranked fighter is just a few wins away from a challenge. One of the best wrestlers in the big dog division, Blaydes is still has the look of a fighter who will be a contender for years to come. Abdurakhimov will be a tough test for him.

This is a coming out party for many of Khabib’s Dagestani teammates - Russian Muslims competing in a Muslim country. But don’t think of Islam Makachev and Mairbek Taisumov as coattail riders. They’re very good fighters who could become contenders. It’d be interesting to see a lightweight rankings filled with Dagestanis.
