Daniel Cormier, heavyweight titleholder and dadbod icon, will defend his strap against in a rematch against Stipe Miocic. It’s a matchup that wasn’t DC’s first, or even second, choice. But with Brock Lesnar retiring from MMA and Jon Jones unavailable, Miocic was the next man up.

In context, it’s the fight that makes the most sense in regards to the divisional hierarchy. Still, it seems like Miocic is getting it because there was nobody else, not because Dana White actually cares about his opinions. The memory of Francis Ngannou getting dominated by Miocic is still too fresh to give him another shot, and after that, it’s a pretty steep dropoff. Stipe hasn’t fought since losing to Cormier, choosing instead to argue with anybody in earshot that he deserved an immediate rematch.

The heavyweight title is usually good enough to get a good number of buys on its own, but the UFC is loading up this card with a trio of awesome fights. In the co-main event, middleweights Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa face off in a battle of the most ripped dudes in the division. Pretty much the only promotional material needed here is to have these two stand shirtless next to each other. It’d be like comic book characters facing off - and Costa only knows how to Hulk smash his way to victory.

In a welterweight matchup, Stockton’s own Nate Diaz has actually agreed to fight. Diaz hasn’t stepped inside the octagon since losing to Conor McGregor in 2016, but according to his Instagram, he’s having a lot of fun in Vegas nightclubs. His opponent? No other than Anthony Pettis, who is coming off a huge upset knockout over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Because this is Nate Diaz we’re talking about, of course, there’s already beef between the two. Can you say grudge match?

What to Watch For

Even though it took less than one round for DC to knock out Miocic, online oddsmakers opened with the champ as a slight -150 favorite. That seems a bit low after such a decisive outcome, but Miocic is bigger, younger and still one of the most well-rounded guys in the division. He’s a good fighter who should be able to make adjustments. Still, this seems like a really good price on the champ.

Romero opened at -220 with Costa at +180 on the comeback. That makes sense, as Costa hasn’t faced anyone in Romero’s stratosphere at middleweight. In fact, we’re pretty sure this fight was made solely for aesthetic purposes - “The Eraser” might be the one guy who is buffer than Romero, which is just crazy. But he hasn’t shown that he can win any other way besides charging forward and throwing bombs. Watching him try that against Romero, who has the most violent outbursts in the game, should be like watching two high-speed trains collide.

The fact that Nate Diaz actually signed a contract to fight is newsworthy. The guy is a bona fide superstar and cult hero, and it seemed like he was content to smoke weed and party for the rest of his days. He opens as a slight +105 underdog to Pettis at -125. Win or lose, Diaz is never boring, and in Pettis, he draws a fighter with some of the most electrifying highlights in the sport. This seems like a case where Diaz might end up as a minus underdog, considering Pettis’ habit of wilting under constant pressure.
