UFC 239 Jones vs. Santos Betting

UFC 239 takes place on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card airs live on pay-per-view starting 10pm ET.

Jon Jones wasn’t lying about making up for lost time. Just three months after recapturing the title against Alexander Gustafsson, he defended it against Anthony Smith this past March. Just four months after that, he’ll step into the octagon against Thiago Santos. The matchup with Santos headlines the UFC’s 4th of July weekend card - an event that the company historically loads up with great fights.

Santos has been on an absolute tear, winning four straight and knocking out his last three opponents. The man with the giant hammer tattoo on his chest has been taking out his opponents with violent blunt force trauma, and his highlight reel should cut a great promo for his upcoming championship fight.

But is he really a threat to a motivated Jones? At the very least, his knockout power should provide an interesting wrinkle - we never got to see Bones fight Anthony Johnson, but this kind of makes up for it.

In the co-main event, double-champ Amanda Nunes will defend her bantamweight title against Holly Holm. This will be Holm’s second attempt at capturing the 135-pound strap, as she memorably knocked out Ronda Rousey in one of the most thrilling upsets in UFC history to win it the first time. Holm has had an up-and-down career since then, but upsetting Megan Anderson last July was enough to put her back in a title fight. Holm’s star status also helps her here, as she’ll always be one of the bigger fights out there in the women’s divisions.

The rest of the card is being filled out, but here’s who we’re looking at so far: Junior dos Santos vs. Francis Ngannou, Ben Askren vs. Jorge Masvidal, Luke Rockhold vs. Jan Blachowicz. If that’s the main card, we already want in without even hearing the rest.

Almost nobody decides to go buck wild against Jones - and why would they? He’s a generational talent that specializes in making guys look bad. But hammering away is what got Thiago Santos to this point, and I think everybody wants to see him actually test Jones’ chin with the hardest kicks in the division. Of course, Jones’ wrestling could make this an easy win, so don’t get too excited.

For some reason, Amanda Nunes can’t seem to gain any traction with fans. She retired Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate with her blistering strikes, and she knocked out Cris Cyborg - the most dominant women’s fighter in MMA history. The Brazilian is one of the most dangerous punchers in the business, but largely ignored by casual MMA fans. Could that change by beating Holm? Probably not, but we do know that it won’t be easy - there are few fighters more tactical than Holly, especially when it comes to striking.

What happens when the heavyweight division’s most explosive puncher meets its best boxer? We’ll find out when Francis Ngannou and Junior dos Santos collide. Ngannou seems to have fixed his mental issues, and he’ll have plenty of chances to land one of his trademark hellpunches against JDS. Then again, JDS has returned as a legitimate heavyweight contender, and he could easily shatter Ngannou’s renewed confidence.

Ben Askren’s long-awaited UFC debut resulted in a win, but it could not have been more controversial. Benefitting from an early stoppage over Robbie Lawler, Askren’s gloating did not endear himself to fans. Now he meets Jorge Masvidal, Lawler’s teammate. Masvidal is coming off a huge upset over Till, and the dark horse contender could credibly ask for a title shot if he’s the one to give Askren his first career loss.
