UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier Betting
UFC 236 takes place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta Georgia. The main card airs live on pay-per-view starting 10pm ET.
Has there ever been a UFC pay-per-view headlined by not one, but two interim title fights? That’s the case with UFC 236, but you won’t hear many complaints. That’s because the main event between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier is an honest-to-goodness superfight. In the co-main, Israel Adesanya - the hottest middleweight in the business - meets Kelvin Gastelum for the 185-pound strap as well.
Holloway, the reigning featherweight champion, will dip his toes into the lightweight waters and could become a double-champ in the process. These fighters met seven years ago in Holloway’s UFC debut, with Poirier taking the submission win. But as Poirier recently stated, both guys were just kids - Holloway was 20, Poirier 23 at the time. They’re men now, and completely different fighters to boot.
Of course, no interim fight is complete without some controversy. Longtime MMA fans are wondering where Tony Ferguson falls into the picture, but Dana White stated that he turned the fight down. Later, El Cucuy cited on Instagram that he was still recovering from a knee injury. While Holloway vs. Ferguson is a dream fight, slipping Poirier into the mix should produce awesome results as well.
As for the middleweight interim fight, Robert Whittaker’s inability to defend is Adesanya’s gain. After beating Anderson Silva, The Last Stylebender steps up to meet Gastelum - the man that Whittaker was supposed to fight at UFC 234.

Online oddsmakers opened with Holloway as a -280 favorite, with Poirier at +200 on the comeback. These prices are as of late February, and mark my words: Poirier’s price is going to drop. Though Holloway looked like a beast against Brian Ortega, smart bettors should realize early that Poirier is a fantastic value as a 2-1 underdog. He is a violent, violent man and Holloway’s health is always an issue.
We don’t have the same expectations for Gastelum, who opened at +175 to Adesanya at -210. This isn’t the best style matchup for Kelvin, who will have to deal with a taller, longer striking specialist. However, if Gastelum’s price rises to anywhere close to +200, it’s a play that we’d consider - he’s especially good at pressuring long-range snipers and forcing them to fight in a phone booth.
Other fights to watch for is a light heavyweight matchup between Eryk Anders and Khalil Rountree. Not because it carries much significance at 205, but because this should be a quick, action-packed war. Both dudes are killshot hitters that waste no time trying to turn the lights out. We’d parlay the fight doesn’t go to decision prop in this one.
Paige VanZant also returns after a win over Rachael Ostovich, meeting Brazilian Poliana Botelho in a flyweight matchup. The news here is that PVZ is fighting again soon after her January tilt, and it could be a sign that the young prospect is looking to stay active in 2019. Botelho was submitted by Cynthia Calvillo this past November.
