UFC 230: Cormier vs. Lewis

MMA Picks

UFC 230 takes place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (21-1, 1 NC, 10 KOs, 4 SUBs) will defend his title against knockout artist Derrick Lewis (21-5, 18 KOs, 1 SUBs). The card airs live on pay-per-view starting 10pm ET.

Just one pay-per-view after the Khabib-McGregor superfight, the UFC is giving us a heavyweight title match. And it just so happens to feature one of UFC 229’s breakout star: “The Black Beast” himself, Derrick Lewis. It’s one thing to score a dramatic, last-second comeback win in a fight you were getting dominated. But Lewis topped that by following it up with the funniest post-fight interview in UFC history, on the biggest night in UFC history.

That’s one way of becoming a star. And now, the one-dimensional knockout artist who never really seemed like a legitimate contender is fighting for the title less than a month after taking a beating at the hands of Alexander Volkov. Daniel Cormier’s probably drooling at the thought of an easy paycheck. It’ll also be his first heavyweight title defense.

Despite the UFC announcing a banger of a scrap between middleweight hulks Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa, the massive Cuban has stated that the fight won’t be taking place. Though we really hope this contest happens, we tend to believe the fighter when they said that they’re not ready. Let’s hope he heals up in time.

If those 185-pounders don’t get it on, there are still three crazy good middleweight matchups to look forward to. The biggest of them is a rematch between former champions Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman, respectively ranked No. 2 and No. 3. Perennial contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza meets former WSOF champ David Branch, with both men jockeying for a title position. The division’s most exciting prospect, Israel Adesanya, puts his undefeated record on the line against No. 6 Derek Brunson. At times, “The Last Stylebender” looks like the second coming of a prime Anderson Silva, and everyone is hoping that this dude is for real.

UFC 230 Betting Lines, Predictions and Picks

Here’s a weird story. In an interview with MMAJunkie just days after the Volkov fight, Lewis came out and stated that he had no desire to headline UFC 230. That he had already started eating breakfast biscuits and his cardio was nowhere near the level it needed to be at to realistically challenge for the title.

He ended that interview by reluctantly saying that it’d take a giant paycheck for him to jump into a title fight with one of the best to ever do it. Later that day, Dana White announced that Lewis would be fighting for the title. Sounds like somebody got PAID.

Still, the UFC’s greed is showing here. Lewis was almost finished multiple times, and it was clear he couldn’t last five rounds. Now the UFC is putting him on a card less than a month later? That’s called exploiting a star turn. And while we love how honorable DC is, it sure seems like he’s cherry picking here.

The last time Weidman and Rockhold met, the AKA surfer boy cracked the former All-American wrestler and took the belt from him. Time hasn’t softened the grudge between the two, and it was a close fight up until that point. Rockhold has since been knocked out twice, suggesting that his chin is a serious weakness. Coincidentally, Weidman suffered two brutal knockouts as well before bouncing back against Kelvin Gastelum.

Both these middleweights are good everywhere, though they have different approaches in every phase. Rockhold’s submission grappling is top notch, but Weidman is a stellar classic wrestler. Weidman can box with the best of them, but Luke’s unorthodox kicks can do major damage.

Ronaldo Souza can’t seem to catch a break. One of the most accomplished BJJ artists to ever enter the octagon, he’s been in multiple title eliminators, only to fall short in each one. Beating David Branch probably wouldn’t seal the deal, but he could keep his name on a short list of worthy challengers. Branch could vault into the title mix by taking out the well-regarded Brazilian.

Israel Adesanya has everything it takes to be a star: an engaging personality and more importantly, an electric fighting style. He is obviously a special striker, landing all eight limbs with extraordinary accuracy and power. Of course, like all great standup artists, he’s got to pass the wrestler test, and Derek Brunson - a former collegiate wrestler - is more than qualified to dish that out.
