2017-NCAAF-Navy-Midshipmen-Betting-OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: You want to hear the craziest fact of the year? Navy HC Ken Niumatalolo has been at the Naval Academy longer than every other coach has been at their campus in the American combined. Niumatalolo hasn’t even been in Annapolis that long, only eight seasons, but the coaching turnover in the American has been crazy. The Navy Midshipmen are considered a favorite once again in the AAC West this season and will look to win their first ever conference title in 2017.

Navy Regular Season Win Total

Everybody knows exactly what Navy is going to do on the offensive side of the ball. The Midshipmen have run the triple option exclusively for the last 15 years and it has been a smashing success. Navy keeps finding quarterbacks to plug in and run the system and still managed to win nine games last year despite losing Keenan Reynolds.

Zach Abey started last season as the third-string quarterback for Navy. He ended the season as the starter after injuries to Will Worth and Tago Smith left him as the lone man remaining. Abey will be the main man for the Midshipmen in 2017 and although he is a little inexperience, he has shown that he can run the option as good as anyone. Additionally, he looked to be a competent passer, albeit in very limited situations.

Navy has implemented a bend-but-don’t-break defense under Niumatalolo. That has been mostly successful, but efficient offenses have been able to exploit it, especially through the air. The Midshipmen have the big boys up front to stop the run for the most part, but the talent just isn’t there in the secondary.

The Midshipmen could get pretty far into the season before suffering their first loss. Navy doesn’t play the best teams on its schedule until November, but then the chickens come home to roost. November features road trips to Temple, Notre Dame, and Houston and it’s hard to imagine Navy exiting with a 2-1 record or better in those games.

Navy has a ton of history. This is the eighth-oldest program in the country and the oldest FBS program outside of the Big 10. For the first 60 years, the program was solid, finishing almost every season with a winning record. The Midshipmen even made a few bowls back when only a handful of games existed.

A 10-year period from 1954 to 1963 was the high point of Navy football. During that timeframe, the Midshipmen made four major bowl games and won the Sugar Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. The team even had two Heisman Trophy winners with Joe Bellino winning the award in 1960 and Roger Staubach claiming the trophy in 1963.

The program fell on hard times afterwards, but Paul Johnson inspired a renaissance. He took Navy to a bowl in his second season at the helm in 2003 and the Midshipmen have only missed out on a bowl game once since then.

The success of the triple option has inspired a lot of imitators, but no one ran it better than Keenan Reynolds. Reynolds set the FBS record for career touchdowns during his four years in Annapolis and was named an All-American as well.
