2017-NCAAF-Louisiana-Monroe-Warhwaks-Betting-OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks are trying to make a bowl game for just the second time in the school’s history. In their 31 years as an FBS program, the Warhawks have only had three winning seasons and no coach that has lasted multiple seasons has won more than 40 percent of their games on the job. Head coach Matt Viator is looking for a miracle in his second season on the job, but Monroe is one of the toughest places to win in college football.

Louisiana-Monroe Regular Season Win Total

Like many Sun Belt teams, the Warhawks have traditionally used a quarterback with mobility in their offense. Last season, Louisiana-Monroe used three quarterbacks and all three spent a significant amount of time running the football.

All three quarterbacks are back this season. Garrett Smith and Caleb Evans are the two that are most likely to see action. Smith was a better passer and runner last season, completing a higher percentage of his passes and running for more yards an attempt than the other two signal callers. He should get the bulk of the work, but Evans will see action.

The running game might be the best it has been in quite some time. The Warhawks have only averaged four yards or more per carry on the ground in two of the last seven seasons. This season, Louisiana-Monroe has a stable of solid running backs. Ben Luckett and Thomas Koufie were the team’s leading rushers in 2016 and Derrick Gore is a transfer from Alabama that will get plenty of action.

Louisiana-Monroe’s defense will be significantly better than it was last season. The Warhawks allowed 260 yards on the ground in 2016 and were one of the worst defensive fronts in the country. This season they return eight starters to that defense and will be better able to stop opposing offenses.

This team was blown out way too often last season, losing six games by 25 points or more. Although getting blown out by Oklahoma and Auburn is understandable, the fact that three of those games were against conference opponents doesn’t bode well.

It’s incredible to consider that Louisiana-Monroe still has the amount of support it does with how poorly it has historically been. The Warhawks play in an area bereft of talent and don’t have a ton of resources despite being an FBS program longer than most teams in the Sun Belt.

Todd Berry tried to make it work here and lasted six seasons before the school decided to change course. Berry led the school to its lone bowl appearance and secured wins over power conference schools like Arkansas and Wake Forest.

This non-conference slate might be the toughest in the country. The Warhawks accept a lot of guarantee games in order to keep the program running smoothly, but this year is a little crazy.

Louisiana-Monroe plays road games against Memphis, Florida State, and Auburn in 2017 and hosts Southern Miss as well. Even winning one out of those four would be a massive accomplishment for a team looking for an identity. It’s hard to imagine this team doing enough to make a bowl game but a win over rivals Louisiana-Lafayette would mean a lot.
