2017-NCAAF-Idaho-Vandals-Betting-LInesNCAA Football Betting Online: The Idaho Vandals are looking to make their last year at the FBS level a good one. The Sun Belt Conference announced that they were planning to drop Idaho, as well as New Mexico State, after this season because of the travel costs. The Vandals looked around the college football landscape and found that no other conference was willing to accept them. Rather than make a run of it as an independent, the school decided to cut its losses and become the first to drop down to the FCS level starting in 2018. Finding a way to win the conference in its final season would be a nice thumb in the eye.

The Vandals hopes rest on the broad shoulders of Matt Linehan in 2017. Linehan proved adept at lighting up the dregs of the Sun Belt, but had some issues against the better teams in the conference. He was largely ineffective against both Troy and Appalachian State, but had a phenomenal performance in the bowl game victory over Colorado State. He lit up the Rams for 381 yards and four touchdowns and led Idaho to its third bowl victory in school history.

Linehan won’t have a lot of the targets he had last season though. Four of the five top receivers from 2016 are gone but at least the starters this season are seniors with some experience. Jacob Sannon and Alfonso Onunwar should be the two leading receivers this year.

The running game wasn’t bad last season with the top three running backs all averaging at least 4.6 yards per carry. They might take a step back this season though with four underclassmen projected to start along the offensive line. Jordan Rose is the best player on the offensive line so look for running backs to follow him often.

Tony Lashley is the leader of a defense that returns most of its linebackers from last year. Lashley had over 100 tackles and nine tackles for loss and was the star of the position group that was the best on the defense in 2016. The linebackers will need to do even more this season with a lot of inexperience along the defensive line and in the secondary.

Finishing the season like they did was nice, but the Vandals won’t be able to keep up their record in close games in 2017. In Idaho’s four losses, they lost by at least 18 points. The school was 4-0 in games decided by one score thanks to a +11 turnover ratio, but that is unsustainable.

The history of Idaho football is largely one of misery. The Vandals have been around for 75 years, but have only made three bowls. Only one coach, Chris Tormey, has won at least half of his games since the 1920s and he left to take the Nevada job after just four seasons.

It would be great to see Idaho get to a bowl in its last season. The schedule isn’t too difficult and it’s not a stretch to imagine this team winning six or seven games. Winning the Sun Belt is too much to ask though.
