For the first time since their epic 23-7 Super Bowl IV win over the Minnesota Vikings, the Kansas City Chiefs have finally made it back to the Super Bowl. Kansas City opened as a one-point favorite with the NFL odds over the San Francisco 49ers. While the Chiefs look to have the edge at quarterback the 49ers old school approach of punishing defense with a powerful ground game make them a formidable option as well. Super Bowl LIV Betting Odds Analysis

Much of the betting on the Chiefs revolves around superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 NFL Most Valuable Player. By contrast the 49ers are drawing betting action based on the combination of their strong regular season as the top seed of the NFC combined with their decimation of the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game. Kansas City is seen as something of a sentimental choice for their 50 years in the wilderness between Super Bowl berths. By contrast San Francisco is viewed as something of a traditional power with five Super Bowl titles in their history. Overall betting is expected to remain virtually even on both sides.

Andy Reid

Speaking of sentimental figures, head coach Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs is certainly in that conversation. Reid is no stranger to leading a team to the Super Bowl. In the 2004 season he led the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX where they lost a heartbreaker to the New England Patriots 24-21. Reid immediately took over the Chiefs after being fired by the Eagles after the 2012 season. He has led Kansas City to the playoffs every season but one in his seven campaigns. Reid is one of the most popular and respected figures in the coaching community. As such he will draw a lot of good wishes from the coaching and scouting community. Reid is the coach with the most career wins that is yet to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Kyle Shanahan

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is in his third season. He is the son of two-time Super Bowl winning head coach Mike Shanahan. Kyle Shanahan has partnered with San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch to quickly turn around a franchise that was an utter debacle after the departure of Jim Harbaugh following the 2014 season. Much like his father, Kyle is seen as an offensive mastermind. He cut his teeth as an offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, and Atlanta Falcons.

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs became starting quarterback last year and exploded upon the NFL scene by winning the Most Valuable Player award in his first season as starter. At the age of 24 he has already emerged as a great leader that won’t allow his team to ever relent. Mahomes is also a spectacular playmaker that has engineered numerous clutch performances and comeback wins.

Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo began his career as a backup to Tom Brady with the New England Patriots. New England head coach Bill Belichick had planned on grooming Garoppolo in as the eventual starter to replace Brady. But after Brady voiced his displeasure Garoppolo was sent packing to the 49ers. Unlike the dynamic Mahomes, Garoppolo is seen much more as a game manager that is highly efficient while making few mistakes.

The Matchup

Although the Chiefs defense tightened up in the second half of the season and playoffs, the 49ers unit was far more consistent. San Francisco’s powerful ground game will try to attack the up and down Chiefs defense. However, Kansas City does possess the ultimate weapon in Mahomes. He will be the best player on the field. And at the end of the day that just may be enough.
