The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season, but they showed in their game with the Patriots last week that they may just be for real this year. We’ve seen this before from the Chiefs. They start fast, fade during the middle of season, catch fire before the playoffs then flame out when everything’s on the line. We’re not quite to the halfway mark in the season, but this team has a different feel to it. One that says it isn’t going in a slump with Patrick Mahomes leading the NFL’s second-highest scoring offense and a defense that can’t be much worse than it’s been.

Kansas City has been probably the biggest surprise of the regular season, jumping out to a 5-0 record before falling by a field goal in Foxboro last Sunday night. While they’ve been good on the field, the Chiefs have boosted the bank accounts of their backers as well. They covered the 3.5-point line against the Pats and are a perfect 6-0 ATS this season. They’ve also played four of their first six contests on the road so the back end of the schedule will have plenty of home games, starting with Sunday night’s matchup against the Bengals.
As much of a surprise as the Chiefs are, the Bengals are right up there. I’m sure nobody except for some people in the Cincy front office, and not all of them, saw this team leading the North after six weeks. But that’s right where they are, tied with Baltimore and having won the first meeting with the Ravens. But the Bengals can’t get past their old nemesis and the Steelers did it to them again last week.
The question for the Bengals now is how do they respond after another emotional loss to Pittsburgh? And also can they get healthy enough to field a formidable team in KC. The opening total is the highest for a Bengals game this year and the second time it’s eclipsed 50. Cincy won and cashed the over in Atlanta in Week 4, but this group is much different looking than it was three weeks ago.
Andy Dalton is putting together a solid season and will have to be the catalyst moving forward. The Bengals have already lost Tyler Eifert for the year and his backup-turned-starter Tyler Kroft has a broken foot. John Ross missed the last game and so did Gio Barnard. That’s a good chunk of offense on the shelf and the Bengals managed just 21 points in their loss to Pittsburgh. They do have A.J. Green and Dalton targeted him 12 times last week. We’ve learned through the first six weeks of the season that you can’t count the Chiefs out of any game with their explosiveness. They managed just three first half field goals against New England and trailed 24-9 at the break.
