Old School Meets New School
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have not been able to get on track since Chris Ash took over the head coaching job at the start of 2016. Ash stepped into a terrible situation as Kyle Flood and the administration left the program in poor shape. He is slowly making this team better, but has yet to win a game in Big Ten play, posting an 0-10 record in conference. That won’t change when the Ohio State Buckeyes come to town this week, but it will be a chance for Rutgers to show how far it has really come....
It will be a while before another team’s fans request the Alabama Crimson Tide. Vanderbilt’s fans started chanting they wanted the Tide the week prior to their showdown against Alabama in Nashville and quickly realized that they made a horrible mistake. Alabama completely dominated Vanderbilt in a laugher and didn’t even have starter Jalen Hurts throw as much as backup Tua Tagovailoa. Bama now has its sights set on a team that has given it trouble these last three years, the Ole Miss Rebels.Kickoff for this regular season Week 5 game is set for Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 9 p.m.ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This game will be broadcast on ESPN....
College Gameday is coming to Blacksburg! The Virginia Tech Hokies are 4-0 and looking to move into the Top Ten with a win this weekend over the Clemson Tigers. A win would be a small modicum of revenge for Clemson knocking off Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship last season. That’s easier said than done though. Clemson has looked fantastic this year and although quarterback Kelly Bryant is no Deshaun Watson, he’s done enough to make this team a national title contender for a third straight year....
The USC Trojans keep finding ways to win. USC opened the season ranked in the Top 5 and have not faltered yet. There have been quite a few hiccups though. The Trojans have only convincingly defeated one opponent and needed quite a bit of luck to squeak by Texas last week. USC will go on the road for a second straight week but will play in a much tougher environment this Friday night. The Trojans must travel to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars and deal with rabid Wazzou fans....
It’s been a rough year for the BYU Cougars. BYU has been unable to get any sort of offense going all season long and its lone win was a victory over 0-3 Portland State. The Cougars are in desperate need of a win if they are to have any hope of making a bowl with their tough schedule. The Utah State Aggies will try to stop that from happening as they too are looking to get back to a bowl after going 3-9 in 2016. These two will face off with one of the best rivalry trophies, The Old Wagon Wheel, on the line....
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are reeling. Nebraska fired its AD in the middle of the week prior to its game against Rutgers and Mike Riley’s job security Is suddenly in question. The timing of the firing was very odd and does nothing to alleviate the problems of a program that has been unable to find traction in three years under Riley. Nebraska does get a much easier opponent in the Illinois Fighting Illini this time around, but a loss would probably spell curtains for Riley, no matter what fashion it came in....
The Duke Blue Devils are looking to move to 5-0 for the first time in over two decades this week. Duke has quietly looked great to start the 2017 campaign and will lock in a bowl berth with just two more victories. Yet, it feels like the Blue Devils wouldn’t be satisfied with just a postseason spot this year. Duke feels it has a legitimate chance to win its side of the ACC and will look to take a big step towards that when it welcomes the Miami Hurricanes to town on Friday night....
Ames will be rocking on Thursday night when the Texas Longhorns come to town. Texas might be just 1-2, but looks better than it did at the tail end of the Charlie Strong era and that improvement has the fanbase excited that the team is moving in the right direction. However, now the program must take on the Iowa State Cyclones on the road and try to avenge the most embarrassing loss of the Charlie Strong era. Another loss here would really sting for Texas and send a message that this team is still miles away from being a contender....
Rivalries new and old take center stage this week in college football. Although some of the older ones look like they are duds, we saw last week that mayhem can happen in any given week of college football. No matter what you may think about one team’s chances in a specific week, these are still highly impressionable and emotional kids and they can play down or up to their competition depending on their mindset. Now, let’s take a look at some of the top games of this week....
The Washington Huskies are proving that last year wasn’t a fluke with every game this season. Washington was dismissed as an also-ran once again this offseason as USC garnered most of the attention from the media, but the Huskies keep winning games. They crushed Colorado last week in their fourth straight double digit win to start the season and seem destined to go undefeated until at least a home game against UCLA. Their next test will come this week when they face the Oregon State Beavers....
The No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies have played the role of comeback kids already a couple times this season. That’s a scenario head coach Justin Fuente will hope his kids can avoid on Saturday afternoon when his Hokies close out their non-conference slate against Conference USA’s Old Dominion Monarchs. This will be the first ever meeting between the schools, and if last week was any indicator for the visitors, it likely won’t go smoothly. This matchup in Week 4 of the regular season will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 2 p.m. ET at Lane Stadium. This game will be broadcast live on the ACC Network....
The Air Raid attack of the Washington State Cougars will look to set its sights on the winless Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday when the programs meet for the first time since 2014. Mike Leach was in his third season at the helm in Pullman when his kids dropped a 24-13 decision in Reno. Now with his Air Raid attack running at full speed, he’ll have his kids ready to avenge that defeat and close out the non-conference slate in style.Kickoff for this regular season Week 4 game is set for Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 6 p.m. ET at Martin Stadium. This game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network....
Fresh off an incredible last second win against the Tennessee Vols, the No. 20 ranked Florida Gators will hit the road for Lexington where the program will look to snare its 31st straight win against the Kentucky Wildcats. Yes, you read that right. The Florida Gators 30 straight wins currently checks in as the fifth longest streak in college football. This is however the shortest spread in decades, so it’s possible some history is made on Saturday night. This contest in Week 4 of the regular season will go down Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Commonwealth Stadium. This game will be broadcast live on the SEC Network....
The Ducks have started the season 3-0, including a win over Nebraska, and the offense is hitting on all cylinders. Arizona State, meanwhile, has lost two in a row and has serious problems on defense. Sun Devils coach Todd Graham is on the hot seat and seems assured of getting fired if he can’t get things turned around. It will be tough in this one as ASU is a double-digit underdog despite playing at home....
Notre Dame has won two of its first three, with the lone loss coming by a point to a nationally ranked Georgia team. The Spartans are 2-0 but have yet to face a team that has the caliber of players as the Fighting Irish. This is a good barometer for each side after they both finished with four wins or fewer a season ago....
The teams will play at a neutral site and the spread is low enough that this game could go either way. Texas A&M has had an adventurous non-conference slate, blowing a huge lead in a loss to UCLA and then needing a rally to knock off Louisiana-Lafayette last time out.Despite those struggles, this is still a winnable game as the Razorbacks are coming off a blowout loss to TCU. Both of these teams badly need this win and it should be a competitive showdown....
After getting thrashed at home by the Clemson Tigers last Saturday night, you can’t help but think the Kent State Golden Flashes will serve as nothing more than sacrificial lambs to the No. 19 Louisville Cardinals who are badly in need of a get well spot. That said, this is an awful lot of chalk linemakers are asking Bobby Petrino’s kids to eat, and the hangover effect could play an enormous role on how this game plays out....
The Miami Hurricanes have been forced to sit on the sidelines due to actual hurricanes over the last couple weeks, so it goes without saying that Mark Richt’s kids will be eager to get back onto the playing field for their first matchup against an FBS opponent. Be careful what you wish for however with the Toledo Rockets not your average MAC team that will just pay South Beach a visit and leave all black and blue....
Everyone seems to be all aboard the bandwagon of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Oklahoma State was seen as the second-best team in the Big 12 prior to the start of the season but now its tilt against Oklahoma in the first week of November very well could determine a spot in the College Football Playoff. This week, the Cowboys kick off Big 12 play against the TCU Horned Frogs, the team that might be the third best in the Big 12 and could make some noise after a lackluster 2016.Watch this regular season Week 4 matchup live on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 3:30 p.m. ET at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma. This game will be broadcast on ESPN....
Coach Ed Orgeron has harped on accountability since last week’s drubbing at the hands of Mississippi State. The LSU Tigers committed nine penalties and lost 112 yards of field position because of those penalties and he has let his team know it in the lead up to this week’s game against the Syracuse Orange. Coach O hasn’t been this upset after a performance for a long time now and it will be interesting to see how the team responds to his fire.Watch this regular season Week 4 matchup live on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 7 p.m. ET at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This game will be broadcast on ESPN2....
The Florida State Seminoles are ready to get back on the field. Hurricane Irma has wreaked havoc on Florida State’s schedule, causing the Seminoles to cancel a game against an FCS foe and postpone their tilt with Miami three weeks into the future. It’s been three weeks since we saw them open the season against Alabama and a lot has changed across the college football landscape. Now they must be very cautious in their first ACC game, when they take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack. This contest in Week 4 of the regular season will go down Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 12p.m. ET at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. This game will be broadcast on ABC....
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are riding high after scoring perhaps the biggest win of Week 3. Mississippi State trounced LSU in its best performance in a long time in the series between those two schools, having its way with the Tigers on both sides of the ball. However, now it’s Dan Mullen’s turn to go on the road in SEC action. The Georgia Bulldogs are looking forward to kicking off their conference slate and will have a packed crowd cheering them on Saturday night.Watch this regular season Week 4 matchup live on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 7 p.m. ET at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. This game will be broadcast on ESPN....
Are the Purdue Boilermakers back? Purdue is one of the biggest surprises of this young season. This team sits at 2-1 right now and has been competitive in all three of its games so far. That’s a far cry from where it has been in the recent past. The Michigan Wolverines meanwhile have limped across the finish line the past two games since throttling Florida in the opener. Michigan didn’t look good against either Cincinnati or Air Force and now gets an unexpected test in its first Big Ten game of the season. This contest in Week 4 of the regular season will go down Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 4p.m. ET at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana. This game will be broadcast on FOX....
Newsflash. Missouri is bad y’all. The Missouri Tigers continue to have major problems on the defensive end and were routed by Purdue at home this week. It was a dismal performance for a team that was supposed to start looking better in 2017 in coach Barry Odom’s second season on the job. That’s music to the ears of the Auburn Tigers, who are once again struggling on offense. Perhaps this game will end up as a panacea to a unit that has failed to find much traction on the scoreboard the past two weeks.Watch this regular season Week 4 matchup live on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Faurot Field in Columbia, Missouri. This game will be broadcast on ESPNU....
Can the Stanford Cardinal actually fall to 1-3 on the year? The Cardinal dropped consecutive road games against USC and San Diego State after opening with a dominating win over Rice in Australia in late August. Those two losses put Stanford in a bad position and pretty much eradicated its national title hopes. The UCLA Bruins dropped a tough one to Memphis on the road this week and will look to kick off Pac 12 play on the right foot here....
