Vegas thinks that the Texas Longhorns are a very live dog against the Oklahoma Sooners this week. The spread in the Red River Showdown is the lowest it has been since 2012, but in that meeting the Sooners hammered the Longhorns 63-21. It’s another week of big favorites in college football as Auburn is the only team in the AP Top 10 that isn’t at least a double-digit favorite. The Georgia Bulldogs are back. This looks like the team to beat in the SEC East in Kirby Smart’s second year on the job. However, like Saban, Smart is now crushing every challenger his team faces with workmanlike efficiency and a suffocating defense. The Miami Hurricanes will have a chance to finally get the monkey off their back this week in the state capital. The Florida State Seminoles have dominated their rivalry this decade. FSU has won seven straight meetings between these two teams and ripped Miami’s heart out in each of the last three. The Seminoles won those games by a combined 10 points and the close losses discouraged the Hurricanes for the rest of the season. For FSU, it’s a shot at tying up the all-time series. The Nevada Wolfpack and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors are glad to see each other, because it means someone is going to get a win. The Kansas State Wildcats should be cautiously optimistic after a nice start to 2017. Nobody can stop the Navy Midshipmen running game. If the Air Force Falcons want to pull the upset over their military brethren in Week 6, they will have to at least keep it from running roughshod. While these teams have very different records in 2017, the gap isn’t as big as they would indicate....
The Northwestern Wildcats went on the road last week and gave a scare to No. 10 Wisconsin. They head home in Week 6 aiming to be competitive against another top-10 team in the No. 4 Penn State Wildcats....
The Arkansas Razorbacks and South Carolina Gamecocks aren’t going to be in the hunt for an SEC title, but both are still on pace to reach a bowl game. Their matchup in Week 6 is a crucial game for both sides in their quest to make the postseason....
You can’t hear but feel a little bad for the Boston College Eagles. This offense is one of the hardest to watch in college football, but somehow the team keeps doing just enough for Steve Addazio to keep his job. Addazio is now in his fifth year as coach of Boston College and the team is the same as always. The Eagles are solid on defense, but moving the ball on offense is a chore. The TCU Horned Frogs and West Virginia Mountaineers will meet for just the seventh time ever this week. The last two meetings have been blowouts in favor of the home team, but the two prior to that were close games in which the road team pulled out a gutty win. This year, the Horned Frogs are looking to do what they should have done a few seasons ago, get to the College Football Playoff. The Ohio State Buckeyes have not been the superpower that we have come to expect. Yes, Ohio State wiped the floor with Rutgers last week, but the Buckeyes were dominated by Oklahoma and trailed Indiana at halftime of their opener. They have looked better in recent weeks, but haven’t defeated anyone of consequence. Now, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes will get a decent test when the Maryland Terrapins come to town....
Mike Riley has one of the hottest seats in football right now. The Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach has not had a good start to the season. Although the Cornhuskers are 2-0 in conference play, those two wins have come against the dregs of the Big Ten, Rutgers and Illinois. Now, they have to play the best team in the Big Ten West in the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers are the team to beat in the division after a big win over Northwestern last week, and an upset win for Nebraska here could potentially save Riley’s job....
Sparty On! After a disastrous 2016 season, the Michigan State Spartans are back to their old winning ways under Mark Dantonio. The Spartans are 3-1 on the season and are fresh off of a big win over Iowa last week. In that game, they jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and then held on in the second half for a 17-10 win. This week we will see if Michigan State is for real. They will travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines for the Paul Bunyan Trophy....
The Washington Huskies are looking like the best team in the PAC 12 once again in 2017. Last year, Washington went 12-1 and easily won the PAC 12 title over Colorado before getting waxed by Alabama in the College Football Playoff. Despite prognosticators picking USC to win the PAC 12 at the start of the season, the Huskies are the best team in the conference through September. They are 5-0 and haven’t been tested all season, but haven’t faced an offense like the California Golden Bears yet either....
