Jean Pascal vs Badou Jack Preview

Pascal won the gold medal in the light middleweight division at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics but failed to medal, leading to him deciding to turn pro the following year.

His first several opponents proved to be no challenge. Pascal won 11 of his first 12 fights by knockout, and most of those knockouts occurred in the first two rounds. That led to Pascal getting minor title shots, and he defeated Jermain Mackey by unanimous decision to win the WBO-NABO super middleweight belt in 2006.

More victories came after that win, and he eventually received his first shot at a major belt in late 2008. Pascal lost a unanimous decision to Carl Froch for the WBC super-middleweight belt, but he bounced back six months later and claimed the WBC light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Adrian Diaconu.

Pascal successfully defended that belt twice and faced Chad Dawson in a unification fight. He won that bout by technical decision as a result of an accidental head butt, adding the IBO and The Ring light heavyweight titles. That led to a big payday with a fight against Bernard Hopkins, and the two squared off twice in six months. The first fight resulted in a draw, but Hopkins dealt Pascal his second loss in the rematch.

He challenged Sergey Kovalev for the WBA, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles, but he couldn’t make it past the eighth round in either belt. That was followed up with a loss to Eleider Alvarez, and he lost another title fight to Dmitry Bivol in November 2018. His last two victories weren’t anything to write home about as he beat Marcus Browne by technical decision and Badou Jack by split decision.

It’s been a rough few years for Badou Jack. He was hailed as one of the next great middleweights early in his career. Jack won his first 15 bouts, and he didn’t suffer his first loss until a stunning first round knockout at the hands of Derek Edwards. However, he defeated Jason Escalera and Francisco Sierra to get back on track by the end of the year.

Jack beat Anthony Dirrell by a majority decision to win the WBC super-middleweight title in April 2015. He defended that belt with a split decision win over George Groves and then won a majority decision over Lucian Bute. His less than convincing performances continued with a majority decision draw against James DeGale and a majority draw against Adonis Stevenson. However, he did score a fifth round TKO of Nathan Cleverly for the WBA light heavyweight belt.

He lost by unanimous decision to Marcus Browne in January 2019, surrendering all his titles in the process. That was followed up with his loss to Pascal, but he did beat Blake McKernan on the undercard of Mike Tyson’s fight with Roy Jones Jr. last November.
