It’s a gimmick fight but the match between former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul is getting plenty of notoriety and action at the betting window. The delay of a few months only adds to the suspense. Originally scheduled for July, the fight was postponed when Tyson experienced medical problems. He’s been cleared and the eight-round bout is set for November 15 in Texas.

It’s been nearly 20 years since Tyson last had a competitive fight with an unceremonious end to a brilliant boxing career. He lost three of his last four fights saying he lost his passion for the sport. In his final fight Tyson quit before the start of the seventh round suffering a loss to journeyman Kevin McBride. Though the fight is sanctioned as a professional bout by the state of Texas, there are some stipulations. The match will consist of eight two-minute rounds, with 14-ounce gloves for added protection. Paul opened as the -286 favorite with Tyson +223 underdog.

If the former champ doesn’t take this fight seriously he could very easily be embarrassed in the ring. Though Paul is an internet celebrity he’s taking his boxing career seriously having won 10 of 11 fights since turning pro in 2020. His lone loss was to an experienced boxer dropping a split decision to Tommy Fury in February 2023. It was hard to take him seriously at the start of his journey with wins over fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib, former NBA player Nate Robinson, and MMA fighters Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley (twice) and Anderson Silva.

Upping the ante after winning his first six fights, Paul tangled with Tyson Fury, who has a boxing background, in early 2023. Despite knocking Fury down, Paul was handed a split decision loss but he presented himself well. Since then Paul has won four straight fights, the last three by stoppage with TKOs over Ryan Bourland in March and bareknuckle boxer Mike Perry in July as a replacement fight for the originally scheduled Tyson bout.

You could be in the best shape of your life but things start breaking down when you get older. Approaching 60 Tyson experienced that a few months back having to reschedule this bout due to a medical issue. When he first started his boxing career in 1985, Tyson was the baddest man on the planet. No, seriously, that was his nickname. Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by KO with 12 of them in the first round. He became the youngest boxer ever to win a heavyweight title when he stopped Trevor Berbick in the second round to claim the WBC strap.

Tyson added the WBA belt with a UD over James Smith in March 1987 and the IBF title five months later shutting out Tony Tucker. He successfully defended six more times before a stunning upset loss to Buster Douglas in 1990. He reclaimed the WBC belt in 1996 but consecutive losses to Evander Holyfield were the beginning of the end. He ended his career losing five of his last 12 fights with two no contests.

Still, his legacy remains. Tyson is recognized to this day as one of the greatest heavyweights ever with 44 of his 50 wins by knockout. He messed around with exhibition and charity fights after his retirement to help pay the bills, according to him.

Bet Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul

It’s hard to see a 58-year-old man beating a kid half his age, which is why the odds are what they are. Paul wants to have a boxing career, he’s in shape, and most of all he’s a heckuva lot younger. The fight with Fury was an indication of how Paul is handling his experience. He could’ve won that fight knocking Fury down and going toe-to-toe with him. Some observers thought Paul did enough to earn a victory.
