There’s just something about a heavyweight fight that seems to spark more interest than any other weight class. There’s a good one lined up for February 8 in England when Brit Derek Chisora faces Otto Wallin in what is being touted as Chisora’s last bout in the UK. With 35 wins in 48 career fights, Chisora has stated he’s ready to hang up the gloves following his 50th fight. However, Chisora looked like a fighter half his age last time out scoring a unanimous decision victory over fellow Brit Joe Joyce. It was his second straight win following a loss to Tyson Fury for the WBC strap in December 2022.

Jarrell Miller was the original opponent for this fight but a contractual dispute forced a change with Wallin agreeing to step in. rebounding from his second professional loss, Wallin was devastating scoring a first round KO of overmatched Onoriode Ehwarieme last July. It was his 15th KO win but first in nearly four years. Seven years younger with a four inch height and reach advantage, Wallin opened as the betting favorite at -220.

Derek Chisora vs. Otto Wallin Fight Preview

With this supposedly being the penultimate fight of Chisora’s career he better not get too consumed with the farewell party. He said the plan all along was to compete in 50 professional bouts then call it a career. At 41 years of age you might expect Father Time to alter those plans, but Chisora showed fight, pardon the pun, in a win over Joe Joyce last time out. Giving away 25 pounds in what some observers called an “old school” bout, Chisora turned the scales in his favor with a ninth round knockdown.

Best described as a back and forth affair, Chisora defied his age showing stamina to take numerous blows yet still go the distance. Counting his knockdown punch Chisora landed some of his best punches in the later rounds eventually scoring a close unanimous decision. According to CompuBox Joyce threw more than 250 more punches but Chisora had a better connect rate. Chisora also worked the body that seemed to have an effect in the later rounds.

Just a few years ago many had written Chisora off following a stretch of four losses in five fights. The first was a UD to Oleksandr Usyk on Halloween night 2020 when he lost the WBO inter-continental title. Chisora then lost back to back decisions to former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker. In December 2022 there was a third fight with Tyson Fury, who handed Chisora his first professional loss more than a decade earlier and won the second bout in 2014. Fury completed the hat trick with a 10th round TKO.

A champion at the regional level, Wallin is looking for the breakthrough win that will get him into the heavyweight conversation. He shot up the ranks winning his first 20 professional bouts. In a closer than expected tussle with Tyson Fury in September 2019, Wallin went the distance but suffered his first loss. About 14 months ago Wallin was defeated for the second time when former unified champ Anthony Joshua unleashed a barrage of punches in the fifth round rendering Wallin useless. He failed to come out for round six resulting in a TKO.

Despite the outcome of his two most recent fights there is some concern around Chisora. He’s giving away a lot in terms of height and reach and he had trouble when faced with a similar disadvantage in three losses to Fury. He’s also seven years older, which is considerable when you’re in your 40s. I’m not comparing Wallin to Fury, but Otto had one of his best matches against the former heavyweight champ and is dialed in with a potential big payday coming after this bout. Wallin also showed he can take some blows after getting rocked a few times in the Fury match.
