A possible Super Bowl preview highlights the slate of games on Sunday in Week 13 of the NFL season when the 9-2 Philadelphia Eagles visit the 8-4 Baltimore Ravens. The Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs might disagree, but the best team doesn’t always win. The Eagles enter as one of the hottest teams in the NFL having won seven straight games with payouts in each of the last three and in five of their past six games. They are also just one game back of the Lions for the best record in the NFC. The Eagles are hoping to avoid a late season collapse like last season when they lost five of their last six regular season games. It’s not being talked about that much but you know it’s heavy on the minds of the players. It was at this time last year the Eagles went in the tank. They entered their Week 13 game with San Francisco boasting the best record in the conference at 10-1, but the Eagles were humiliated at home 42-19 starting a mind-numbing collapse. In just about six weeks they went from being the Super Bowl favorite to also-ran that was eliminated in a wild card game.
There are reasons to believe Philly won’t duplicate that performance and it starts on offense with a seasoned Jalen Hurts, who has a better completion percentage, higher average yards per attempt, and far fewer interceptions in 2024 than he did last year. And it helps that Hurts hasn’t been the focal point of the offense. Sure he gets the accolades and criticism that come with playing the position, but Hurts has leaned on an abundance of playmakers.
The biggest asset is former Giant Saquon Barkley, who set a franchise record by rushing for a career-high 255 yards in last week’s win over the Rams. Barkley ripped off a pair of 70-yard touchdown runs and took over the NFL rushing lead from Baltimore’s Derrick Henry. Barkley has 1,392 yards and Henry 1,325. No other runner in the league has reached 1,000 yards. With his 10 TD runs Barkley has helped the Eagles to the seventh-best scoring offense and they lead the league with 193.4 rushing yards per game and 22 TDs.
If we’re going to talk about offense the Ravens have to be in the conversation. Lamar Jackson is having another outstanding season with over 3,000 passing yards and a NFL best 27 TD passes. In addition the MVP has rushed for 599 yards, a figure that ranks him ninth in that category in the AFC. And Henry is showing he still has something left in the tank leading the NFL with 6.0 yards per rush attempt and 13 TDs.
The Ravens are one of only two teams to average more than 30 points and as it’s turned out they need all of them. The club isn’t as stout defensively and we’ve seen a number of shootouts with Baltimore. Seven times they’ve scored at least 30 points in a game and they’ve yet to lose also cashing the OVER is six of them. In each of their four losses the Ravens failed to score more than 24 points
The way it looks we could have plenty offense, which is why the total of 51.5 is the highest on the Week 13 board. The Ravens have been a moneymaker for OVER bettors exceeding the closing total in 10 of their 12 games. However, with the top two rushing teams in the NFL they will try and establish their dominance. And I’m backing the UNDER with hopes that Barkley, Henry and LJ don’t snap off a number of lengthy run plays.
