Is there a team in CONMEBOL worse prepared for Copa America than Venezuela? This is really the only South American team which seemingly has no chance whatsoever at anything productive in this tournament, creating another scenario for a long three matches for a team which has only made it out of the group stage three times in its history in this great tournament.

VENEZUELA PROFILE

Odds To Win Copa America: +6600

Team Nickname: La Vinotinto

Head Coach: Rafael Dudamel

FIFA World Ranking: 74

HOW THEY GOT HERE

The FIFA World Rankings often lie and lie miserably due to the coefficients used to calculate the numbers, but there are some facts which really don't lie. Venezuela is ranked No. 9 of the 10 teams in CONMEBOL, and it's just in front of Burkina Faso and just behind Benin and Uganda. That statement in and of itself tells you just how embarrassing the program is right now for La Vinotinto.

Venezuela comes to Copa America knowing that this is its last chance for a little while to have an impact on the international stage. The team already has just one point in six matches in the CONMEBOL qualifying for the World Cup, effectively already guaranteeing that it won't be headed to Russia in 2018.

The only victory Venezuela has in the last 11 months came against Costa Rica in a match played at home with no consequence. Winning friendlies is fine and dandy, but you've got to win your matches against your contemporaries in World Cup qualifying and in more serious matches like these at some point as well. It's been awhile for Venezuela.

KEY PLAYERS

Salomon Rondon has had a really good career already for his homeland. He's only 26 years old, and he already has 14 goals to his credit in 47 career appearances. He's playing for West Brom now, a team which has survived yet another season in the Premier League, and he's going to hope to bring that survivalist mindset back to his homeland.

There are a few Spanish-tied players in La Liga to choose from, though Juan Pablo Anor, Roberto Rosales and Alexander Gonzalez aren't exactly playing for the top notch teams. These three are all still very young though, and they could be the types of players to take Venezuela to the next level someday.

It's just too bad that this defense is raw an generally pretty bad. Oswaldo Vizcarrondo is looked upon as one of the best players on this team, but he's the only 30-something at the back, and he's really the only player behind the midfield with any chance of holding the fort with regularity. Aside from that, this unit has been a sieve, especially in the World Cup qualifiers.

COPA AMERICA ODDS ANALYSIS AND QUICK PICK

Life just isn't pretty right now for Venezuela soccer. The Venezuelans aren't in good form, and they've given themselves an embarrassingly difficult travel schedule on the eve of this tournament. Sure, not all of the first-team players are going to travel all over the place before landing in Chicago for the opening match of Copa America against Jamaica, but even sending a coaching staff over to Spain just a week and a half before the start of Copa America is insane.

Venezuela has set itself up to fail in this tournament, and fail it should ultimately do. The ceiling is three points against Jamaica. The floor is an embarrassing defeat in that match and a situation in which it bows out of this tournament with a -10 goal differential. Either way, there's nothing here to see from a betting perspective for Copa America Centenario.
