Today, we'll take a look at Peru and its odds of winning this top South American competition.

The biggest thing Peru has going for it is the fact that so many of its players stay at home to play their club soccer. The Peruvians could have as many as nine players on their roster playing club ball with Sporting Cristal, and that cohesiveness will be the most important thing for them heading into Copa America Centenario.

PERU PROFILE

Odds To Win Copa America: +4000

Team Nickname: Los Incas

Head Coach: Ricardo Gareca

FIFA World Ranking: 46

HOW THEY GOT HERE

Peru was allowed in Copa America due to its CONMEBOL affiliation, and its history in this tournament is quite good. Los Incas have who Copa America before, and they're working on a streak of five straight Copa Americas in which they've reached at least the quarterfinals.

Still, the recent form isn't anything to write home about. The Peruvians haven't performed well in World Cup qualifying against the very same teams they're having to play against here in Copa America, as they're just 1-2-5 in their last eight matches overall. Scoring goals has been a real problem for the squad at times, though it should be noted that last year when these teams all got together for Copa America 2015 in Chile, the Peruvians put eight goals home in six fixtures.

KEY PLAYERS

The discussion in regards to Peruvian soccer starts and stops with Paolo Guerrero. He's one of the only men on this team to be playing big boy club soccer, as he's been Flamengo in the Brazilian league. Most of the rest of the players have elected to stay at home to hone their craft domestically.

Guerrero has 26 goals in his 27 matches for his country, and though he's getting a little long in the tooth at 32 years old, it's his job to both be a creator and a teacher for some of the younger players like Yordy Reyna who might one day become as good as him.

The defensive pairing on Yoshimar Yotun and Alberto Rodriguez will be under the gun quite a bit. These two are set to play in central defense, and with a midfield which could be disappointing, that could leave a lot of strain on the back line. There isn't a lot of confidence in the goaltending which Peru can bring to the table, as no one available has had even 20 Caps for his country. That's why the back four or five have to be really solid, and it's going to start with Yotun and Rodriguez, men who have combined to play 104 times for their country.

COPA AMERICA ODDS ANALYSIS AND QUICK PICK

We really do like this Peru team as a middling South American side, but unfortunate for it, it isn't playing in a middling group. The Peruvians will be able to put some pressure on Ecuador right out of the blocks by hopefully beating Haiti and moving three points clear of the biggest competitors the last Group B qualifying spot. However, after getting the three against Haiti, we're not all that sure there's a clear path for points.

The match against Ecuador will be the make-or-break fixture, as there just isn't a realistic chance, one would think, to get anything out of the match against Brazil. The optimist could see the Peruvians snaring three points from Haiti and one from Ecuador before catching Brazil napping in a match which wouldn't matter to it on the last day of the group stage. The pessimist could see Haiti stealing a point from that opening match, a result which would effectively end any chance of qualifying.

We could find better things to do with our money than bank on Peru to win Copa America, especially knowing that a match against either the United States or Colombia would be waiting in all likelihood if it did pull off the shocking upset of Ecuador.
