Team Nickname: La Celeste

Head Coach: Oscar Tabarez

FIFA World Ranking: 9

HOW THEY GOT HERE

Uruguay has a fantastic history in Copa America, but its results last year were drab at best. The team was left in the quarterfinals with just one win and two goals to show for its work in four matches, and for a team which won this tourney in 2011 and had reached at least the semifinals in each of its last five appearances, that was a huge disappointment.

La Celeste has played relatively well of late, particularly on the offensive side of the ball with at least one goal in six straight matches. That's why qualifying for the World Cup out of CONMEBOL seems like a given at this point even though there's still a ton of work to be done to finish the job of reaching Russia in 2018.

KEY PLAYERS

Uruguay is never afraid to throw many strikers into the formation, and there's a really good chance that all three of Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Abel Hernandez could find their way onto the pitch at times in this tournament. These three men have combined to score 85 goals for Uruguay in their careers, and none are even at the age of 30 yet. Suarez is used to playing up front with two other strikers, as he splits the front duties with Neymar and Lionel Messi at Barcelona, and La Celeste would be wise to let all three of these men try to roam free as much as possible.

If there's a weakness here to be exploited, it's in net. Fernando Muslera will have plenty of cover from Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez, both of which are key cogs in the flat out awesome Atletico Madrid defense, while Maxi Pereira has become a household name in international soccer with all of the good years he's put in both at the club level and for his nation. Still, Muslera isn't exactly a top flight goalie, and playing at Galatarsaray isn't going to prepare him for matches like this at the highest level.

COPA AMERICA ODDS ANALYSIS AND QUICK PICK

Uruguay has a pretty tough route to take in Group C in Copa America, and we have to think that at least a point from that opening match against Mexico will end up being pivotal. A loss in that match, and things are setting up to be potentially grim against Venezuela and Jamaica. One win was good enough in the group stage to get into the knockout rounds last year, but that just won't be the case in 2016, and Uruguay has to be aware of that.

Pressure could build up on this team over the course of the week and a half it'll be in the United States. Holding serve and avoiding Argentina in the last eight would be crucial, but finishing second and drawing the favorites to win this tournament could end up being catastrophic.

Uruguay can beat any team in this field if its defense is playing at a high level, but just as Suarez's career has been brutally inconsistent, we can certainly see virtually any possible team La Celeste runs into being able to beat them as well.

We'll ere on the side of Uruguay going on a run to at least the semis, but we're not overly confident about it.
