Over the course of their history, Rayo Vallecano has continually moved up and down the tier system of Spanish football. In the past four decades, the club has not stayed in one division for longer than five years, and that has been both a reason for cheer and disappointment from their fans.
Rayo Vallecano has yet to win a major trophy in their long history, but they have come close on a few occasions. Rayo Vallecano continued its movement up and down the Spanish football ladder by winning the Segunda Division and earning promotion to La Liga this season. Raul de Tomas led the team with 24 goals, and he was a key part of their ascension to the top flight. However, he was on loan from Real Madrid and the club opted to keep the youngster and sign him to a long-term deal.
That puts Rayo Vallecano in a tough spot this year. They are looking to stop the yo-yoing that has plagued them for much of their history, but they will have to do it without their top forward from the previous season.
